Another night, horrible, damp, foggy, freezing cold.

On our shoot at Chiddingfold.

Again lamping.

My mates driving quad I'm on back with pump action shotgun ( yeeeeh haaa ) lights out.

Hit something - quad stopped dead - I went flying through the air.

When we eventually found each other we found out what we hit.

A Dead Cow.

So the next day my mate stuck his arm up the cows back side. It died of gorging on acorns.

In the context of this forum, surely "shooting car" means a vehicle that will take a gun and bag in the boot and won't stop in two inches of mud. We are not using it to climb near vertical rock faces or to herd wilderbeast. My RR sport has been fantastic (all round) and I'm only changing it for a new one.
If the criteria is just to carry a gun and a bag and not get stuck in 2" of mud, I'll stick with just about any car ever built.

Soooo, looking for some sensible ideas for a new motor, needs to be used for commuting to work (motorways) and shooting. Needs boot space, maybe 4x4, roomy in case there is more than two of us, does more than 40MPG... and go
A4 quattro estate with the 3.0 V6 diesel, 0-60 in just over 5 secs & 45-50mpg easily do-able on a run.

Will, this your new RR?

Apart from the stupid BMW thing with the stupid slanty tailgate and tiny boot the evoque has to go down in history as the most ugly pointless car since the allegro and or princess.

Simple fact is if you need a four wheel drive proper land rover is the only one but no one needs one other than farmers.

I see where you're going with that, but I'm thinking Toyota and Mitsubishi owners might have something to say about that. TBH if I REALLY needed a proper 4X4 (which I don't) I'd get a Discovery or perhaps a Landcruiser.

Certainly agree with the comment about the horrid BMW X6, but I don't dislike the 5 door Evoque, but I'm not sure I'd ever buy one. Think I'd rather have the new Discovery Sport (the renamed Freelander thingy) In fact for 99% of the time, that would be a pretty ideal car were it not so bloody expensive!

4x4's are generally misunderstood, even by the shooting fraternity. I recall PigeonWatch experts critiquing the Evoque at its launch worried that it may not have the ground clearance for their ratting trips  , the very last thing on the minds of the market segment designers ! Then there are the tree huggers who scream co2 murder when most modern SUV's have the legs on many a 1.6 petrol auto family car when it comes to MPG  :logik:  or recycling credentials.

The X6 is possibly the biggest victim of miscomprehension, it isn't a 4x4, it isn't designed to cope with wet, steep grass inclines and certainly not intended for the weekend pheasant shooter. Its message is: I don't need a big boot, I don't off road, don't even need 5 seats, I need a big, sporty, high, fast badge that handles well on tarmac and I NEED people to know it cost £55k even though it isn't a 4x4, an even less useful (male) version of the Evoque in other words. The Cayenne occupies a similar niche.

If you NEED a 4x4 then either the LandCruiser or a Defender are the only real option.

As a former hill peasant I wouldn't touch a landrover for oh so many reasons and after the troubles my son has had with his Disco I wouldn't go near them either, soft as 5h1t everything from the purchase price to the cost & availability of spares. I'd go Mitsubishi or Isuzu if your priority is a tool for the job i.e. hard going off road, heavy duty and towing.

older style range rovers are  just capable,  and the defender style landy`s, are better,, but  so dated,,, but if your a serious off-roader,, a Jeep Rubicon 3.6 is the choice,,, with a 2in lift, 37 in muds,, winch, snatch  straps , etc....    grin !

Hmmm went for the 3.0D Porsche Cayenne, 8 speed auto, tiptronic paddle shift with more options than I can remember
