Shooting in bad weather...yes or no?

Yes, always dry the gun before going home. My mate chucked his SO5 in a wet slip and left it for a week. EXPENSIVE faux pas..
My lad has a tin of WD40 in his gunbag to give his gun a good spray if it gets wet and before it gets properly cleaning - if there's a delay.  When he was shooting by himself, he was somewhat taken back by getting a bollocking from some old boy who walked past and told him he should never use that on his gun.  (What old boy didn't know was this was being used as a water-displacing spray and not for cleaning/storage protection.)

And although I don't, there are many who do use it routinely on their firearms.

I've just left a tin on the hall table with my reproofed jacket as we prepare for Westfield tomorrow! :thumbsu:

I will shoot in anything, cold, wind or wet......and any combination of the aforementioned .. Don't get much choice in Wales.

Good Gore-Tex suit, good baselayers, Gore-Tex trainers, heated Keis waistcoat, MacWet gloves.....job done.

I work outside daily with no reprieve from the elements. Bad weather is character building.

We have a saying...... 'Man up! skin's waterproof!'

I now have a stock to refinish as we just had the heaviest hail storm I have ever witnessed which was blown horizontally by a strong wind that came from nowere, we were under cover but we had nowere to hide and and as it was horizontal we were soaked.

weather bad for sun so stuff that.
Fortunately I was sat in the car at the time still driving...

Lets face it,even with well covered trap layouts it is possible to get badly soaked getting from the clubhouse to the layout.

If I got to shoot twice a month, then any weather would be tolerated. But as there seem to be about 7 reg shoots on my monthly map, plus 'winter challenges' around presently, I feel I can afford to dodge the occasional aquatic experience.
Hi Will
Do you go game shooting?

. So these days I choose not to shoot comp in bad weather hoeever I might nip for 50 or 75 ut practice localy out for 2 hours home by 2pm.

ips, youv'e hit the nail on the head!  Dont bother with comp's, just go out to shoot and enjoy any weather, never worry about your averages, then go home and dry off by the fire with a glass of something.

Mick  :hi:

Would rather not, don't get out as much as I want as it is but no, have pre-booked and shot a EO and one Beretta World that was badly "affected" by the weather and there was gripes all round, some deserved some clearly not, nether the less for me crap weather spoils the day.

Ps

Aware I'm a lightweight

Avoid shooting clays in the rain at all costs as saving the money for not shooting on that occasion allows me to shoot more in good weather. I don't mind what it does to my scores it's just a case of the overall enjoyment however if prebooked I just get on with it. tomorrow's Fitasc being a good example, bugger!!

I haven't shot competition for a long time, and I lived in SoCal then as well.  So bad weather is a sorta relative term.  I mean, the most of you live in a climatological hell compared. :fie:

So back in the day I never passed on shooting an event that wasn't cancelled.  Averages suffered for sure but I didn't really GAF since I was in it for the win not for  some stupid meaningless average.  And since disassembling a gun has never held any terrors for me cleaning up later was NBD either.  Like was said before, proper clothes and who GAF?

I think tho, that if I had to contend with your weather I'd prolly have not bothered with shooting.  NorCal is bad enough  :haha:

Favourite topic of conversation for us Brits, the weather, and inspired by Lord Pewsey aka Father Tony (and Teepee) I just wondered what people thought....

Better to go shooting and do badly, or better to stay at home in the warm?

Do you mind wind, rain, cold, fog or bright sunshine?

And what if a big competition is on a day when the weather is not to your liking, how does that affect you?

Just wondered....

Jkc xx
No, I don't shoot in strong wind as, apart from not being very pleasant, it's not condusive to good scores. For sporting shooters it may be OK for shooting trap, where every point counts, it's not good and will drag your average down.

I'll shoot in the rain if I absolutely must, I don't know anyone that shoots in the fog and as for bright sunshine, I choose my grounds and the time I shoot carefully so this never normally an issue.

Will usually shoot whatever the weather once I have decided to go otherwise I get serious withdrawal  symptoms but when cold and wet it will always affect my scores

not got an awful lot of fat on me bones and although I work outside regular its the standing around that causes problems guess I am like a thorough bred stallion :spiteful:   only work best when warm and up to speed    (ladies form an orderly queue)
