is that a 250 slab?

My FEO likes his cups of tea ;)

He was very interested in security of the house, do you have an alarm system? (I didn't) but he did like the fact that we have two noisy spaniels, also window locks which were all locked on the day of his visit.
He inspected the cabinet and wall fixings (they like Rawl bolts), he tried gently to pull it off the wall.
I don't think he asked where I would keep ammunition and I didn't tell him, obviously I didn't have any at the time.

Yea I can't see me needing to have more than that and and 1 time.
We don't have an alarm but have motion sensor ccvt front and back and a ring style door bell. I also have a noisy spaniel in the house, tho onces anyone's inside he just takes them to where we keep his biscuits!:ROFLMAO:

I've heard the story about the FEO asking if anyone else knew where the keys where. The one question he did ask me was along the lines of "what can you tell me about shotgun safety and handling" I gave him spur of the moment answers that I'd learnt from my dad, but in hindsight I could've looked online for the perfect answers ;)

I have my shotgun grant interview on Thursday this week and am just looking for a general view of the kind if things that are asked and an idea of the interview it's self.
How did it go? Any hints and tips for myself next week? :)

Yea went okay Fingers crossed🤞offered tea and coffie but said no ( guess thats more biscuits for me!). They said the fact i was honest about my previouse arrest with the police a couple of years ago on my application was in my favour, had to talk about it in some detail. Then just looked over my cabinet and asked about my shooting eperiance and was interested about the CPSA shotgun course I had taken part in. As my partner wasnt in, they have to give her a ring tomorrow before submitting their report. only thing is iI did have 2 officers come, is this normal ?

I wouldn't read anything into the fact that two officers turned up, one might have been a trainee or something

Have your cabinet fitted in advance of the interview. They'll only have to come back if you haven't and this will delay by as long as it takes them to schedule a return visit.

You know where your keys are and no, you won't tell them or anyone else where the keys are kept. I kept mine on my person for the interview so I was ready to show them the cabinet when asked.

Be honest and upfront about any questions they ask. Don't try and fabric anything about attending safety courses, getting training before buying a gun etc. None of it is needed (but they are a good idea) and it's likely you won't follow through anyway once the letter slides through the postbox. I was at the gun shop within an hour of mine arriving.

Be honest about any instances of mental health issues, run ins with the police etc. They'll likely know all of this prior to attending and it should have been listed on your application. The FAO who conducted my interview brought up an incident that I hadn't declared during the interview which I wasn't expecting. The incident consisted of the local beat bobby catching me climbing the school gates out of hours to get my football back. He was driving past and just wound down his window to tell me off. I was 11. No further action at the time and the bobby drove off once I was back on the right side of the gates but it was still recorded and brought up in an SGC interview 19 years later. Luckily the FAO just laughed it off.

They may ask some questions around safety and handling. Just confirm that you approach safety from the point of view that a gun should be treated like it always loaded and ready to fire, only safe gun is an open gun, only ever point a gun at something you are willing to destroy, even when empty, cartridges will only ever go in the gun when your in the stand and ready to go etc. They can't expect too much from you as you are a new comer.

If you've any family events planned at home in the meantime, be sure to get rid of any excessive empty alcohol containers. It won't be a good look if the officer walks past a load of recycling bags packed with empty beer cans walking down your driveway.

Ensure dogs are safely locked away, not all FAOs are shooting people and they probably won't care for three overly excited spaniels accosting them if they want to walk around and assess home security.

If you have young ones then it's probably best that your other half takes them out of the house for a few hours while the FAO is present. Children can say the stupidest and most inappropriate things at the most inconvenient times. Last thing you want is a young one proudly announcing that they saw you putting the keys away and know where they are, even if it's a complete fib.

It'll be over within an hour or so and will feel about 10 minutes long once your in the flow of it.

I would wish you luck but you don't need it. They're there to check that you aren't a lunatic, a threat to the public and unsafe to hold a gun. If you're just a regular, everyday Joe then you'd need to be going some to mess it up at the interview stage.

Yea that's what I assumes when I seen 2 of them. To their credit both nice down to earth blokes. Even when talking about my arrest, didn't seem like there was any judgement.

Yea just take it easy, if you haven't got any medical or criminal issues to talk about you should be fine.

I did make a mistake tho! I had my keys in a draw because obviously the cabinet is empty. He wanted to check the bolts inside so asked for the keys and u walked over to the draw and just pulled them out. Later I realised what I'd done and did send him a text just saying that if I was to have a licence I have a lock box for the keys to go into with a random combination, so don't think I,ve just chucked them in the draw for all to access.

During my interview the FEO was keen to hear about my experience to date and where it was. I explained that I had been having lessons, and he rang up the club to check. Not just a general check but dates etc.

I had done the CPSA shotgun skills course and he did ask if I had certificates, which I did, and he asked about the course but I think it was more because he hadn't heard of it.

They had all the details. Probably on her charge sheet.
How much influence does the FEO have with grant approvals?

I was very open and honest about my arrest even thought it led to no further action. He even made a point of saying that putting it down on my application has gone on my favour, as if I hadn't, and it came up on my background check ( which it did) he wouldn't have been sat in my house doing the interview.
But ultimately the FEO just writes a review and the decision is made by someone else

Well, that's my interview done and dusted Weds morning. Nice guy and positive as far as I could tell, cup of tea, chat with the Mrs and Myself. Had a good swing on the cabinet and happy when he left. Referee contacted today so fingers crossed for the next couple of weeks.

This thread popped up in my emails, ironically enough yesterday I just got mine in the mail. Thought it was taking a crazy amount of time.
Applied December 23, interview March 24 and just received October 24, I did read another post on here generally saying Avon and Somerset wait is 9 months . Had a friend apply in Staffordshire and had his in 3 months. Seems so wildly inconsistent. And get the interview officer did swing on my cabinate exactly the same same

Hampshire here. Applied Sept 23, first contact from FEO at the very end of July 24 and then to be fair to them delays from my side getting cabinet fitted. Expected ~8 months when applying but seems to be around 12 months at the minute.

Just to add my tuppence worth, I had my interview back in February (Met Police).

I was advised during the application process to try and get a couple of references to the FEO. I'd just finished doing the Bisley Approach at the NCSC, so the manager there very kindly wrote an email to the FEO, as did the secretary of the team I'd been on a few shoots with. Don't expect them to CC you in, as it should be a fair and honest assessment (good or bad). If you're attending a local club and someone on staff has watched you handling shotguns, it might be worth asking them for a reference.

I'd also done the Shotgun safe shot theory test on the BASC website and sent in the certificate from that. I also joined BASC (handy for the insurance) and the CPSA.

As others have said, if you can get the keys secured in a keystore somewhere in the house definitely gets the thumbs up. It's also worth thinking about where your gun safe is - in a cupboard is best, basically just to keep it out of sight.

I applied around June 23 I think and had a call this month, could have had interview that week but had commitments, so interviewed last week and was told to expect it to take 10 days, so I'm hoping to hear something soon

Think some of the semantics comes down to the officer on the day. I deliberately left both keys in the lock and it left open as it was new. Maybe just because it was obvious he didn’t mention it. Only thing raised was mine it upstairs on the opposite side of an office and there’s a small potential it can be seen from the outside, but states there will be blinds added as we’re renovating.

My friend made the interview easy, like someone said earlier, just be yourself.
