Just spoke to Mike again and the ABT is monthly as long as there is enough interest so I for one am hoping there is.
I hope the numbers are there too Ian. My local ground, Worsley, has both ABT and UT facilities, but I cannot remember the last time (if ever) it's held a reg comp in either discipline.

I shot the UT at worsley yesterday I go maybe 6 times a year when there is nothing on and or I cant be arsed with a long drive. They don't actually have the ABT anymore not sure why but its just UT not a bad layout after 12 mid day before that the sun is in your eyes. Degla will be great as its an hour exactly for me I just hope that the northern trap shooters who moan all year about there being none actually turn up.

I've shot the UT at Worsley a couple of times, once as part of our annual charity 'War of the Roses' shoot - then we shot a ton of it when we had our shooting trip to three grounds in Italy last April. Liked it a lot as a discipline, it's just nigh-on impossible to get on on the UT layout at Worsley, as it has a number of squads who arrive early doors and then camp out on it all day :D And you can forget trying to use the Skeet range, which is on the same layout as the UT.

They have ABT on the same layout as the DTL at Worsley, at least they have the Promatic software and card system for it, I'd have to check to see if they have the corresponding trap for ABT though. I've heard of it being shot there, but never done so myself.

At least you do have plenty of trap shooters up there mate! Trap shooters down this way are few and far between! Yes there are quite a few of the "all round type shooters", but very few that ONLY shoot trap and even fewer who shoot OT only!!!! I really do fear for the future of trap in this country, especially OT. As we've discussed before Ian, OT is becoming a sort of elitist game, but down here it's not because there is no OT ground and not because of any elitist attitude on the part of the shooters themselves, there aren't enough of us for that! Yes there have been OT have a go days and what have you, however I don't know if many converts to OT were actually found as a result of those days.  OK we know that OT is not meant to be easy, however because it is so hard the majority of shooters will not shoot it, mainly because it's very easy to miss more than you would at any other discipline,(especially on layouts where the traps are set to maximum), this alone will scare away a lot of potential converts!  So in Dorset we have a ground with great OT layouts that are under used most of the time from what I've seen, it's such a shame but that's how it is down here......and maybe elsewhere too by the sound of things!

:fie:  And what is wrong with Brookbank in Cheddar?  good traps, quality targets, trap shooting ground owner! the only problem is that Wesley doe'snt suffer fools gladly!   :hunter:   :hunter:   :hunter:   :hunter:   :hunter:   :hunter:

Nothing wrong with it as far as I'm concerned! I haven't been there since it was called Cheddar Valley, basically a very long time ago. My only issue is the distance from where I live, it's about 65 miles and just over an hour on a good day, but up two hours on a bad day! If Southern Counties does fold up, I guess Cheddar will be the place I will have to go, I will have almost no choice really, unless I only want to shoot DTL every other Saturday at Axminster.

Hi Snipey what would you like to see changed.Prices are quite good at mo.Competition is about the same as anywhere else.

No green fees to pay like some clubs.Quality of lay out is spot on.

Food and drinks are always gonna be more money with a set up like Southern.

Let me no as i am on the committee and i would like your feed back

Hello Gazza, I was wondering when you were going to show up! I don't think the prices are bad either and yes, the layouts are very good. Coffee at £1.30 is not bad,  so I can't really complain. Any news on fixtures after March next year?

More to the point les is what's happening long term as its only fare that shooters get told if sc is defo closing or not. Ask him les go on ask him.

I don't know the owner of SC, never even seen him! I heard that our Dorset Chairman was asking him what was happening, but I've heard nothing more, nobody has as far as I know!

Very curious. Probably turn up one day and the gates will be padlocked and a big closed sign.

I hope not Ian!!!!!  I really can't think that all these rumours are good for business over there mate!

Garry,

Quite simply, for me its all about the quality of the targets! I can't comment on any other disciplines as these days I'm only shooting skeet (although the Sporting always use to be shiite), but the British Open skeet was a prime example of how not to do things! My main issues are:

- I feel that the targets are rarely hooped (low's are always very low) and you're made to feel like its the end of the world to re-hoop them (if they don't point blank refuse). If you're adamant they have been hooped, leave the hoops up for the first squad through!

- The questionable decision to use black clays on ANY layout at any time is beyond me. If the OSK fences are left up then blaze must be used as they stand out against them (I shoot the pairs quickly over the middle so they don't affect me in terms of targets hitting them). And layout 6 needs blaze ALL the time because the low is quite hard to pick them up against the bank!

At the end of the day, we are paying a premium to shoot there (£40 per 100 comp birds is right there); so the targets NEED to be right and ill happily shoot there.

Food and drink, whilst expensive (£1.30 for an instant coffee!!); doesn't really bother me; just means I bring my own if I feel like! I do know someone who asks them for 2 cups of hot water and then goes back and asks for tea bags!! haha

For me the benchmark these days is Nottingham (although I have yet to visit the London grounds); great targets regardless of weather conditions and good value food/drink.

We hope you manage the journey to Brook Bank very soon - we've been continually making changes/additions to the ground since 2005. Now is a great time to practice OTR - we have 2 ranges, including the new Nasta layout - we held a 100 registered comp yesterday.

We don't often host UTR competitions these days, due to the new additional levies applied by BICTSF :(

The price of a freshly ground americano, espresso, cappuccino or latte will set you back £1.30 :)

Thanks Cyril :)

Wesley's mellowed over the years - now he doesn't speak to fools at all!!!

I hope to get up there to you quite soon! Sounds like it's changed a lot since.............? God only knows how long it's been, in fact I can hardly remember the place now, mind you I've shot at so many places over the years and as you get older the memories can often get mingled!!!!!

Aye, shot there a couple of times at selection shoots when it was Cheddar Valley GC. A most enjoyable experience.
