Well yesterday I attended a BASC Ladies Day shoot at Bisley 80 birds, two classes novice and experienced and 8 stands of 10.  I enjoyed the social aspect as quite a few of the lovely ladies I am used to seeing about the circuit were there and I shot with Jane Bennett and Lorrayne Harris.  Given the shoots I am used to attending it was not a difficult shoot but I still managed to miss 8.  It is funny though how you dread what you consider an easy bird because you know you should get it.  Three driven birds cost me dearly, also lost one of the second birds on that pair just because I was frustrated at the driven - so scoring 6/10, then two quartering rabbits (we shot down on the rabbits) because they jumped as I pulled the trigger, I lost one more bunny because I anticipated a jump! - 7/10 and then on a long crosser, the best target of the day I dropped the third one as I decided to measure it! score 9/10.  Total score 72/80, second place after the lovely Natasha (Gnasher) who scored 74/80 in the experienced category.    Then went on to Churchills and shot like a numpty - should have gone home to bed instead as was the original plan.

I have resolved that once I feel able to undertake instruction without losing the plot (talking about driven birds) I will go to John Heagren specifically for this type of bird.  I have forewarned him of my nature and he reckons he can handle me.  They are costing me too many on shoots and gives me little wiggle room for dropping the odd stupid bird.

I would be interested to see how you get on with John as likewise driven seems to be one of my bogey birds which strangely I never used to have issue with. Clearly he knows his stuff as excels at the RBSS tower challenge. I find myself rushing to get driven early or taking up awkward positions to take as an overhead crosser to avoid having to take directly overhead as I normally miss them. May head down to Long Siberia over Xmas as fair few driven stands (at least last time I visited which was a while ago).

I have always had an issue with driven and I am completely negative when I enter the stand for the driven birds.  I can sometimes get a few and it really depends on what type of driven bird it is.  It is also easier for me to take them as crossers where I can or a weird combination of driven barrels but canting them slightly.  Anyway I am not consistently doing this and I really need sorting out.  I know shooting with one eye does not help but that will not be changing so need to find a strategy.

Shot Purbeck's ESP on Wednesday, and as usual thoroughly enjoyed it. A good variety of targets - high, low, crossing, fast, slow and a few down in the dip below.

Got severely beaten up by distant right to left crossers, which cost me dear, and flummoxed by a target that rose from a few yards in front and quartered away fast and low. Once you've drawn virtually a blank with three of the targets the other misses - the ones down to lack of concentration, sloppy gun mount, snatching, and worrying about the other bird add up to a fair total. I finished on 71 which surprised me. Must do better, and must seriously work on the right to left distant stuff.

The winning score was 84.

Driven with one eye shut is never going to go well IMO. It just can't because you cannot see the target once you pass it. You might suss one particular driven by getting the timing right, but this doesn't mean you have a method sussed for all. I would reckon playing with a dot on the glasses to just kill the muzzle but allow some view of the clay.

The RBSS tower is nearly all crossers in effect btw. Only a few real driven.

Been there and done that for about an 8 month period.  The dot method in all its sizes and shapes does not work for me at all.  Even tried having both eyes open for driven but that is just bloody dangerous where I am concerned.  I know nothing about the RBSS tower challenge as I would not go near it with a barge pole but I am sure of John Heagren's ability and with me half the battle will be me having any sort of trust in your abilities, the rest is their challenge.  There is also the unfortunate issue of me feeling very sick when looking up for any period of time into a clear sky - this has resulted in public vomiting at Hodnet!

So glad I'm not John Heagren. ?

Good luck to you both though..

Weston Wood today. Went late, unusually for me, but watched my son rowing at Wallingford in the morning.

Lovely winter sun, made a few edgey ones hard to see. Not the toughest course, but no stand was dead easy. Stand 1 was pretty full on, with an unusual format of following pair with different two r-l targets. Big entry, about 200.

Had brain fade on two stands. Bit sloppy elsewhere, but not unhappy with the score I suppose. Not in the money of course.. Possibly a perfect example of a wide appeal shoot?

I make a point of looking at various grounds scores most of which I have little chance of visiting on a regular basis and there is no question Steve is a very astute chap, he clearly spends massive time and energy in making sure his layouts are entertaining and new every time (leading to massive entries) but refuses to beat people up for a laugh. It takes a very clever person to know what constitutes balance and when to stop. Full respect to all such designers.

I had a poor poor Sunday myself, not because the targets at Greenfields weren't nice to shoot but this is the second time in a row that they have overcooked their reg by a noticeable margin. Each and every stand was killable of course but as a whole it lacked balance and nous. Some stands could take 5 off you in seconds, many stands featured two hard targets and we also had no workable window pairs ! This unfortunately means that many people end up falling outside the 10% rule which means wasted time and money.

Yes, you may hear 97 HG and think easy, but as ever not the way to judge it. Notably a shoot with 192 entries but only 10 people exceeded 90. And in C class, 54 entries but nobody managed 80. As I say, pretty spot on I think.

Lovely rounded shoot at Four Counties this morning. Dropped some very poor clays on the first few stands as haven't picked the gun up for a few weeks.

I finished on 77/100 but should have been in the 80's.

I noticed Mr.Hewland was leading on 93 when I left; I've still not managed to meet you in the 18 months I've been shooting. New Years resolution to change that.

Mr.Faulds arrived as I left so he might straight the entire shoot again like last time!

Be be interesting to see the scores when they come out.

Ha ha. Sorry Doug. My vest has my name on but I'm not wearing it in the winter. Churchills cap always on, but that's not unusual.. I'll tap you on the shoulder if I see you.

Four Counties was my bogey ground for years whereas it's where I'm suddenly doing best these days! I think it must be partly that it's not as tough as it used to be and partly that I've sussed that the stuff out over the open fields never needs as much lead as I thought. I think a 94 was leading at 2pm and RF was still out there, hopefully suffering a massive hangover.

There were two tough stands today, the sim battue and crosser, plus the one at far end of car park with the long l-r and fast high away sim pair. Managed 9/10 on both of those which I was happy with. Where I tossed it away was stand three, the sim high away pair in the woods. I hit 2 out of first six! Then just took a simpler approach to last pair and smashed them, still 4 away on a stand that should not have hurt so badly.

Yes a good enjoyable round at 4C these days for sure.
