Howdy folks, sorry if this is a subject that's been covered before i've done a bit of searching and i've drawn a blank (other than a topic about flight cases).
I'm going to be travelling over to the USA next march (from Scotland) and have a couple of days to kill. So i've come up with two grounds where i'm planning on going to shoot some trap. I could borrow a club gun, but I don't really fancy that as i'll be coming back to two registered shoots the weekend after I return, so taking my gun over is becoming the likely option and i'm hoping for some advice as this will be the first time i'll be flying with my gun.
So, absolute basics....
I know that i'll have to apply for a 'temporary importation permit', anyone got any experience of doing this? Is it fairly simple?
What's the proceedure at the airports? Should I be giving myself extra time to go through security checks etc? If i have changes do i need to pick my gun up at each airport? I expect there will be checks on arrival/collection too?
Should I be looking at specialist insurance?
What's the best way to secure my gun for days not in use? I have all the usual bits & bobs (lockable case, trigger lock, etc) but is there an extra level i should be going to?
Sorry if this is all a bit basic, i'm very keen to get this first trip under my belt and open the door to more shooting holidays overseas. All help appreciated.
