Wow!  Such dislike of flaps???  :fie:

I've got a Croots Rosedale with Flap, Zip and Handles. The only time the Zip is used is to open it up for drying when wet.

I find the flap such an easy and quick way to get my gun in and out, and it brings out my "Inner Cowboy" as it is like withdrawing a rifle from a scabbard, or a pistol from a holster.

Once the leather strap is a little broken-in, helped by application of some saddlery leather treatment, it is silky smooth in it's use.

I find it eternally frustrating at a shoot when a name is called to shoot a stand, and the shooter is faffing about with a full length zip that sticks and slips, ending in a panic with a tug of war to remove their gun. Of course they should have been listening to the shooting order and made ready prior to being called, but it's always someone who only uses a zip!!

Mine has my initials embossed on the leather of the flap too. 1, So I know it is mine, and 2, Because I am a snob!!  xD

Ah but Top Dog it is nice to see a gun removed from the slip broken and once you practise the manoeuvre it can be very fast and efficient :)  (tongue in cheek also but don't have a picture for that one)

Ah! Sian, as an Ex-Instructor on CPSA Safety Officer Courses, my gun is always broken when removed from, and replaced into my slip. It is my final check for being empty when putting it away, and my first check the barrels are clear before loading on the firing point. It's a thing which was taught, but rarely repeated by the candidates unfortunately.

I am a great lover of ettiquette and a strong advocate for safety practice. You will also find my barrels are pointed at the ground, not at the gathering of my squad members legs or chests. I take great exception to looking the wrong way down anyone's barrels, even from within their slip, and particularly I find, when their gun is loaded!

For anyone considering buying a gunslip.

The following may be of use to you.

I have spoken to the owner of Johnshooter  (they have a website listing lots of shooting stuff).

He is very happy to give discounts if you mention that Peter Harris (Salopian) from The Guild of Shooting Instructors recommended Johnshooter to you.

They do stock extension pads, cartridge bags, various gunslips and a very nice cartridge bag and belt for on the hip. Ideal if you don't want wear a skeet vest.

What price for a usable gunslip without the flap of the devil, for proper clay shooters....?

I don't know if you can get Briley products directly in the UK, but.the Briley gun slips are excellent, IMHO. They are a waxed cotton knockoff, very easy to clean when muddy, light in weight, and very well padded. Plus the "seams" make them very easy to fold up and in half or thirds to stick in the handles of your range bag to keep out of the mud while you are on the stand. Many colors and about $50 in the states. I have several for when the entire family wants to head for the clays range. They do have the dreaded "flap," however.
