Blimey! Was that a Croots slip?
No I don't think so. To be honest Tony had bought it for me and I have no idea where it came from.   The actual slip was lovely but obviously the zip was rubbish.

Right, research has been done and I've had to go and lie down at some of the prices being charged for a leather gun slip. Following much research I've decided I'm going to get one of those handy Hamilton things with the funky legs.

Only kidding. Croots has won my heart. They do a leather slip with strap and handles and without a top buckle (annoying!). The question I have for you now: is anyone doing something comparable that I've missed?
Yes, try Phil Ogden

Quick update on this.

I have ordered a new slip from Phil Ogden, it's being made to order and should be with me in about 10 days or so. I will try to remember to post my thoughts and a picture or two when I get it.

I have a new gun slip. It was a surprise present, just turned up in the post. Turns out my father ordered it for me. It's a Croots gun slip in dark havana leather without a top flap but with shoulder strap and also carrying handles on the zip side. I am very pleased. Really pleased. Croots do the nicest leather I've seen. It is certainly prettier than any of my handbags! Having looked at just about every gun slip on the market I think that Croots do the best value (not the cheapest, just the best combination of quality and price) as similar quality can easily cost three times as much. Anyway, I'm happy and I shall use the slip for the first time when I go out this afternoon.

What you need to compliment your new slip is a Croots cartridge bag in dark Havana leather... and it just so happens I have a brand new, totally unused one for sale :)

UPDATE:

At his request (ie he asked me to call to remind him) in all I had previously spoken to the seller twice since ordering, each time I have been told "It's down on my list for next week mate"

Again at his request, I phoned again today fully expecting to be told it was ready for sending out. But no, once again my order had been consigned to some mythical list, and would be "another week or two"

Given the delay, I very politely pointed out that it was he who originally said it would be 10 days, but that was now over 3 weeks ago, and now he was saying it could be another "week or two" he then suggested we not bother as "He was doing me a favour!"

Somebody needs to explain to me why people in some businesses appear to feel that we custiomers are some kind of burden to be fobbed off and treated with contempt. Had he not wanted to provide the slip or could not do so in 10 days, then why the blases say that he could!

Needless to say that I have cancelled this order.

Slightly annoyed.............

Not great advert for ogden there!

In this modern world of social media and Internet shopping, I'm surprised he wasnt more sympathetic to his customer's expectations!

I suspect if you want 100 items he will bust a gut. Also I've seen his quality and it's good.

To be fair, it's not so much my expectations, more his false promises.

Had he told me from the off that my order was so low in his priorities and of such little consequence; ie that he'd do it when he could, I would have accepted the delay.

However, it was he who said that it would take 10 days. Then 3 weeks later he was still saying the same thing.

The fact that he did not seem to grasp that I had a reason to question him, and he actually stated that he was doing me a favour, that's what annoyed me.

Simple really, in any business you MUST use best endevours to deliver on your promises. If you can't, then it might be OK, but it's never OK to simply ignore the customer or worse still, make the customer wish that they had never bothered contacting you in the first place.

Mrs Bryn decided she wanted to go to Glenluce Gunroom to look at guns, nothing she really liked so she came back with a pair of boots instead :scratchhead:  . I picked up a gun-slip, very nice, strong canvas, seems well made, well padded and almost my kind of price

Been there with an order for non shooting stuff! If they didn`t make unrealistic promises everyone would be much happier !

Got my new Croots all sorted and now a happy bunny. Fits the 32" with extended chokes all snug and proper :good:

Just a thought on this subject.

Many of these gunslips are made abroad using cheap labour and poor materials , so examine well before you buy.

The examples made by Croots and Albion Sporting are without doubt superbly crafted, but horrendously expensive.

There are many many fine leather gunslips made in Spain, Italy and India sold in this country by many outlets.

One such outlet is Johnshooter of Wolverhampton.

Now let's not kid ourselves these are not of the same quality as Croots or Albion, but they are extremely good value for money (nearly a fifth the price of an Albion one) and when you consider many are going to be dropped in muddy fields, for the price of a tin of dubbin you will not notice much difference between Croots, Albion, or Johnshooter.

I think for durability a leather slip far outlasts a canvas one any day.

Westley,

I think what you are referring to is a gunstand that most owners have not read the instructions for their cumbersome unstable golf bag.

If a Croots or Albion gunslip is £130 that is tremendous value but still £40 dearer than a Johnshooter !
