Been having a few issues with gun fit recently with the fairly new DT10X that I have, it's been bruising me quite badly. So went to visit Dennis Stepney today which was really helpful. Turns out the pitch of the stock is wrong so only the toe is contacting my shoulder, hence the bruising. Soooo I have 3 options:

- have the existing stock altered to suit me. I'm a little concerned that this will affect the resale value.

- purchase another DT10 stock to have customised, although this won't match the fore end

- go all out and get the nil-griffe, evo-comp, all £2k's worth but have at least an 8 week wait! Decisions, decisions?

Get the stock altered if you sell it on its no problem if the pitch is wrong for someone else they alter it and put a thicker pad on. Job done

If you get the stock altered to suit you and you shoot well with it......why would you want to sell it?

Your shooting costs a lot more than the depreciation on you gun ever will so why worry about if?

DT

That's rights DT, it's just how I think about things. I doubt I would chose to sell, but if I fell on hard times; I would like to think I would get a reasonable price. That partly why i look after it so meticulously!

Absolutely get the stock altered, it is after all your gun ! It's actually the cheapest option too if you think about it, besides you may never sell the gun and even if you do the prices seem to be creeping up anyways and who knows the new fit may be OK for the new owner.

You can buy pitch spacers like a wedge. kick eez do them in different angles of pitch. Manchester shooting ground (Worsley) have them in stock. Your a long way from there but I would expect sportsman's gun centre will be able to get them. If not a quick goggle im sure will find somewhere that you can get one online.

Absolutely!!  Make sure that's a cure before you chop the stock.  Way cheap insurance.  I have a SxS that's had a wedge in it for some time and I feel no need to buzz the stock when the wedge works so well.

And only the toe touches?  That would be some massive up-pitch.  Sorta strange.

Good point, or at least use the washer under the pad trick and shoot a round or two to make sure the advice is correct.

My DT11 was the same when I got it, I'd already put a thicker pad on to lean then the pull, didn't know it didn't fit me until I got a lesson with Ben H, first thing he did was stick 5 washers between the pad and the heel of the stock, immediately felt much better!!! Shot with the washers for about a year before Jim Young at North Ayrshire made a black plastic wedge for it, cracking job he did too, cut the wedge to the right thickness/angle, glued it to the pad, sanded/buffed it down flush round the edges...you'd think the gun came like that to look at it!!! If I ever sell the gun all I have to do is unscrew the adapted pad and put the original pad back on, simples and very cheap to do ;) :)

Yeah only the toe touches my chest, I spend quite a lot of time at the gym and use to do strongman/power-lifting; so I have a reasonable chest and front delts which seem to get in the way. I'm told that Ben H has/had a similar problem, and has had the stock adjusted in the same way!

Seems a good shout to see about a wedge, to try it first!

I asked Dennis to make me a wedge to change the pitch - he did. Buffalo horn, lightweight apparently.

Just got off the phone with Brian @ UK Gunsmiths, and I'm going back tomorrow evening to have a wedge fitted to alter the pitch; I'm still looking on this as temporary measure however it should give me some time behind the gun to confirm all of my issues are resolved before making a final decision!

Thanks for all of the advise!

Well, I visited UK gunsmiths on Wednesday; and Brian knocked up a 7mm to 1mm wedge to alter the pitch of my gun along with with a used kickeze pad. Excitedly I went out and shot a 100 DTL and managed a 98/288, but found that the bruising is better but the wedge hasn't cured it!
Now I knew that my DT10 Sporter never kicked/bruised me, even after thousands of carts through it. So in a moment of wisdom I mounted one after the other (several times in succession) and noticed that the Sporter sat marginally nearer the centre of the my chest just inside my right delt, whereas the trap is more on it; so i thought switch the stocks! On switching the stocks it feels the same? Now does anyone know if it's possible for the action to be angled, as that's the only way I could explain both stocks feeling the same!?
At the moment I'm sooooo relieved that I didn't simply have my stock cut, as I would have been severely p'd off for it not to be the fix I hoped for!
I'm planning on shooting another 100 DTL at Jethros tomorrow, with the Sporter stock on; but at the moment I doubt whether it will make any difference!

Take the stocks off and sit both bare actions next to each other then just study the angle of the inlet carefully to see if there is any difference ?

Yeah hamster, I'll try that tomorrow when I'm cleaning it; just wondered if anyone had ever heard of it being like this!? To me it just seems strange, knew of cast etc on the stock; but the action!?

It's a remote possibility but if you did things in a hurry you may not have quite got the things home so to speak or could it be the stocks themselves which are cut in a such a way that they dial out their respective differences ?

The stocks are certainly seated correctly. However it seems strange that the current Sporter stock came from a 32" DT10 I use to have, and that fitted identically when I switched them. Maybe it's something to do with it being a trap DT? I'll compare them tomorrow and maybe post some pictures!

Is it not a very small difference in cast or toe in / out. Very small differences can have a huge effect on gun fit.
