Today, likkle wifey came with me shooting for the first time, and she had a go of mine, she fancies having a pop now and again.

as i have no idea, can someone give me some pointers on a nice 12g U/O shotgun, short barrels max 28, as the wife struggles to hold it, so it need to be light, preferably m/c m/c , i would probably use 24g carts for her.

appreciate any advice
My wife started shooting about two years ago the first gun she had was a beretta 686e skeet second hand for £700 was a good starter gun but after a year or so she spotted a mk1 687el gold (same as eell but with some gold inlay work.. the mk2 is pig ugly by the way) with 29 inch barrels it had been fitted with gallery grade wood work very pretty and always gets comments at shoots. its the perfect weight and length and the recoil with 24gram express shells is minimal she absolutely loves it and won't sell it for love or money the thing is we could have saved time and money going straight for the 687el instead of buying a cheap starter gun and you will always get your money back if she does not carry on shooting as for the beretta ultralight they kick like a mule and will only give her grief as with any light weight 12 bore...

I agree. Light weight guns can bash the hell out if you.

Harley - Thought i might be able to offer some advice based on our experience.

Mrs C. started shooting with me about 6yrs ago after a have a go session which got her hooked (i hadn't shot for about 20 years myself). We got her started on a 20b Silver pigeon 28" barrels Multichoke. As much as she liked it she always hankered after a 12 bore and within 18 months after trying out a lot of different guns (including Beretta Superlite - she said it felt horrible, Browning - too big in the grip and lumpy(??) etc We finished up with a Guerini Flyaway 28" which is a game gun really but multichoked and weighs about 7.25 lbs. She still had to have 1- 1/2" lopped off the stock 'cos she's only a 5 footer and 8 stone so "petite" is the right description for her. It kicks much less than the 20b when comparing both with 24gram carts through them.

All i will say is that with hindsight we should have jumped straight into a 12b - we just didn't know any different at the time and just followed other peoples opinion / advice, I would say the usual is true of try before you buy as many types as possible before jumping in.

Hope that helps

I am sure you are right.......

Of course why on earth should I offer my opinion as a 'shooting woman'.....as to what is a good gun for a 'shooting woman' when of course you would of course know much better........and pardon me for giving my opinion or advice from my own experience.....as a 'shooting woman' and daring to voice it.......for fear of stopping millions of women not take up the sport .

Have you heard yourself ???

Is it a histrionic time of the month or something????
You should absolutely offer your advice as a shooting woman...totally agree...

So you saw the thread, thought you could help and with your wealth of hard earned experience, shooting some of the most difficult disciplines, having to do "twice as well to be thought half as good" your input was...a Browning Medallist is a great starter gun.

Don't get me wrong, nice gun for nice money...totally agree.

And there your advice ends.

Until of course...I have something to say. I am new, have an opinion, have knowledge GREAT...sadly I am a lowly Skeet shooter and I like steel shot for shooting skeet.,.oh dear, everything i say is "pish".

So great is your dislike for me, that it blinds you to what I have said. Harley wants ADVICE...no Harley NEEDS advice. He is a new shooter himself, he doesn't know what might be suitable for his good lady and sadly, it has been such a long time that YOU were a new shooter, that you have forgotten what advice is needed.

So I offer this advice, that he needs...even state that there is no reason that a lady cannot shoot a 12, how it would be better if she can...it just needs to fit...etc, but you choose to ignore all of this because you want to have a rant at me and then when I have a go back...you get the hump..."daring to voice" your opinion? No, you voiced no opinion other than to buy a Medallist...until you had a chance to take a pop at me.

So go READ, what I wrote and tell me where I have talked PISH!

"NOOOO...Don't fiddle with the pitch!" Perhaps not fiddle with it, but if someone needed to know how to fit a lady for a gun...pitch might come into it..so now, Harley knows this. Your sexy new stock required a Pitch adjustment did it not?

"Too small a palm swell can give you tennis elbow Nicola? Sounds interesting...can you tell us more?" No...you just reply...Pillocks

Please, stop finding reasons to have a pop at me...I'm really very nice, even if I do shoot steel at Skeet targets. All I have done is give the man advice that he needs (and it is accurate and comprehensive advice), so his wife can enjoy shooting with him and I have certainly never, ever said anything to you that could be deemed antagonistic. Neither have I ever been the type to suggest women can't do X Y or Z because they are women. I am very happy that you have done so well, in a male dominated sport...it keeps us on our toes!

Now...I bare no grudges for stimulating conversation...it kept me entertained while for an hour, before Mrs Skeet and I walked out of Anna Karenina half way through (utter sh!te by the way)..so, now we have both had our say, I would still very much like to hear about the "palm swell-tennis elbow" thing...but over in the other thread, if you are happy to share :)

Harley, sorry dude.

Skeet I do not know you and you do not know me ....No1. (so best not make sweeping statements as if you do know me)

I do not have to write great lengthy messages like you do ...No 2

If you had a sense of humour you would be up to date with the use of pish on here courtesy of Darkside (i think if memory serves me right) who has a very good sense of humour.....No3.

I have explained the tennis elbow several times before....No4

The pish was a general reflection for all men who always think they know what a lady wants....... (laughs out loud)....and was meant to be humourous......No5.

Yes i am not fond of skeet or steel shot .....but then that is my opinion and does not stop you from doing either......No6

I have no interest if you do not like what i say because I was talking to Harley in the first instance.....before you tipped in ticking me off......No7

I do not dance to order.......No8.

You know...I'm quite experienced with this whole, Internet Forum thing. As such, I do not need to have met you or know you very well...I would be happy to meet you, as I say, I bare no grudges with this sort of thing...I only need to know how you have responded to posts on here and to read your signature...that tells me LOTS about your very strong, Feminist views...you are not the first opinionated woman I have met.

Lengthy messages. Given your experience, your hard won success in a male dominated sport, where you had to do "twice as well, to be thought half as good", your technical knowledge of the subject and the fact that this thread is attempting to bring a fellow lady into shooting...I would have thought that a bit more than "buy a Medallist" would not be expecting too much...I would have expected you to jump at the chance.

I am familiar with Darkside/Pish...yep great sense of humour with that guy...but if something is supposed to be humorous, give us a clue :D ...did you see that smiley face? It helps convey meaning when we cant see or hear you. But this thread wasn't meant to be a place for you to (all in good fun) bash men...nobody is telling Mrs Harley what she wants, only giving her the information to help her choose something suitable, so she can enjoy the sport with her husband.

You may have been talking to Harley "in the first instance"...and I never said a word about it...until you took a pop at me..yep, you were directing that post at me, or you would not have said "How do you know the size of her chest anyway!"

Nobody asked you to dance...I have offered up several "peace pipes" to clear the air, as well as bowing to your success in a male dominated sport...the Tennis Elbow thing was one of these...I just wanted to know and hoped you would be happy to tell me...if you took the time to actually read what has been said, this would hopefully become apparent to you.

I agree 12 bore is the way to go, and we now are looking for just that.

Based on the previous reply, I will keep away from Beretta lightweight.

Wifey can't physically handle mine, it's to long too heavy, she suffers with RA , so if I can find a gun with shorter barrels that don't kick as much, that's the one for her.

I don't mind spending a few pound if the gun fits, and she is comfy, again no guarantee's she would be able to continue with this due to I'll health, but I could always sell it on if neccesarry, the important thing for me is spending time together enjoying our selfs.

I tried looking at the semi auto's, but she wants a O/U, she knows what she wants , ..

Thanks for your input so far, it's helped us narrow our search down quite considerably.

What about a 30" MK60, bit lighter than the MK38. Also think about a recoil reduser.

Ideal gun for a lady...as long as they don't shoot trap, a Beretta semi auto with a decent pad with the correct pitch and 24gm cartridges.

Your poor wife!!!!

No smilies on iPad

Just shows that you talk pish as anyone who knows me knows that I am not a feminist ....(laughs out loud).

For such an experienced forum user you should have a better sense of humour ! (laughs out loud)

You as the reader puts the tone on the words written, not me. I am simply making comment .......or is that not allowed?

Patronising pish are things like .....'hard won success in a male dominated world....blah blah'.......'

As I said.....I have made a suggestion to Harley.

The only bit of my post that referred to you was the question 'how do you know about the size of the chest' which in fact is important if you are telling someone to lob off pitch...(laughs out loud)

Sadly your ego took the whole of that post as being directed to you.

So cure to this problem.......note to forum!!! Any of my posts are my own freedom of speak ...they are not directed at Skeety or come to think of it Hamsters......does that make it clear for you for the future.

This conversation is now ended.

Loughsoutdiscreetly within one self whilst miming we're luvving it luvving it luvving it, we're luvving like this, we're luvving it luvving it luvving it, we're luvving it like that :.: :.: :.: .

Not sure who the pishy comments are meant to refer to......but if it is a gang up 'again' please make it clear if you can who you are ganging up on....preferably before the breaktime bell goes.

Right back on track...............

As some of you know my wfe Hazel shoots, but her gun a Browning 525 28" game gun with fixed 1/4 and 3/4 choke, now fits her build. When we started shooting we brought both our guns, from the same dealer in the Oxford area and both are Browning 525's. Over the following years we both now have modified stocks, in my case slightly shorter, about 10mm and an adjustable comb has been fitted. My wifes gun is considerably shorter, she is only 5' 4" tall by about 35mm and has a Jones adjuster installed to correct a cant on the gun hold and to allow her eye to correctly align with the Rib.

Hazel also found that the shape of the Browning butt pad caused bruising on her chest, as if you look at the browning you can see they have a curved shape which can dig into a lady shooter. this was changed when we had the gunstock shortened, by Greenfields in Salisbury.

Hazel has found a cartridge that she likes using a Hull 21grm which seems to provide good breaks and she doesn't get knocked about by the recoil and is able to shoot a 100 bird comp now with no problems.

My browning 30" sporter, with extended chokes, is far to heavy for Hazel to shoot comfortably.

Harley if your wife would like to try Hazels gun she is more than willing to let her have a go.

Why would you ask about a womans gun if you don't listen to a womans reply on it? Maybe some of the other ladies on here can help or some of the coaches who are doing corporate with ladies each day they should have a good idea what is best.
