Getting back on thread, Vince Hancock doesn't shoot Sporting, which is what the majority on here do.

We have established that the majority of AA or AAA shooters may use tight chokes in the order of 3/4 & 3/4.

But why when asked do they recommend the use of open chokes?

As I said earlier, with Teague technology, why would you choose to have one set of barrels with let's say 1/2 & 3/4 choke and another set with 1/4 & 3/8, when you could have it multichoked and retain the same balance?

Much work as been done on patterning and there is evidence to suggest that 1/2 choke is ideal, indeed many people shoot 1/2 & 1/2 in every discipline.

Remember Sporting is now so very competitive that we all need as much help as we can muster, a golfer does not tackle a course with either a putter or a driver, they use a selection of up to 14 variations.

Why if you use 3/4 3/4 fixed choke gun would you risk a miss on a rabbit or close target ?

As I said earlier, I use 3/4 & Full Trap Gun and it is extremely satisfying to centre clays, but I do often wonder if I am handicapping myself.
I shot sporting on same squad as vince hancock last year in America at the classic!!

Well, i used to shoot cylinder / cylinder for a while, then went to Full and X Full and am now back at half and half......most of the targets I shoot now are FITASC and traditional FITASC at that. Half and Half will kill everything from a 20 yard bunny out to a 70 yard teal but.....if you shoot straw bale type shoots or "average" Sporting targets then more than likely there is nothing really out past 35 yards in which case cyl / cyl would probably be fine, combine that with 9's and you wont go far wrong if you are looking for a forgiving combination. Oh and as for cartridges, I shot a FITASC Parcour the other night and I dont think I shot the same cartridge twice, scored a 22 and they varied from 21gr to 24 to 28 in plas and fibre! Yes it helps to find one and stick with it but its not the end of the world if you cant.

Good call Don. Ill wait for someone to come on and ask you what difference you saw in lead between the various speeds of shells too :)

You were carrying 25 different types and brands of shells? :.:  :.:

I don't shoot anywhere near as much as Don - and I reckon I could find 25 cartridges that are all different at home... easy to collect stuff if you have tried lots of different things, Don tests 'hundreds' of shells.

Had my housekeeper change my chokes before she put my gun in the case, asked her to put in nice colours any thing but the pair of black that's in it. Now as I'm trying to just practise and get away from my bead looking habit, it won't make much difference If don't know what chokes in the gun. Shot my average and it was me who stopped the gun on the few teal and incomers I missed. The chokes she put in were quarter and half so a fair change from my norm.

Thank you for all the sensible replies, in fact thank you for all the replies.

As discussed with several of you, this thread was intended more as a post to enlighten the newbies, who whilst learning will blindly follow advice from people that they admire. Unfortunately lots of free advice is only as valuable as the price you pay for it.

Nice to know that common sense prevails and not everyone is shooting 3/4 & full at everything and cylinder at 70 yard crossers.

according to the cartridge tests i have read cylinder should smoke 70 yard crossers

chippy

right......try this for size.....cartridge testing at wylye valley today. Choke experiment....-5 thou in one barrel and 40 thou in the other....couldnt tell the difference in breaks at all ranges, nor could Ian Stones or Keith Forward when shooting the gun "blind" without knowing what choke was in there....so there you have it....choke discussions...POINTLESS! .

On what presentation? You seriously suggesting you can't see the difference on hard going aways or distant teal? Pointless it is if you can't. Doesn't explain why ALL top end shooters shoot very tight though does it?

I can only tell it as it was today....rabbits, chandelles, midi's and standards from 25 yards out to well over 50 yards all broke well whatever the barrel.....

just to add a little more confusion.....4 cartridges from 2 manufacturers were on test including a 24gr which consistently killed a 50 yard plus crosser on the top of the wylye bank through the -5 thou barrel

Yes can't deny that's interesting but also little real use in the scheme of things. The fact remains that tight chokes produce enough repeat denseness to be widely utilised by shooters across the world in different clay disciplines as well as live game, precisely because of what that means/does down range.

The opposite is of course true with open chokes. This is why Skeeters use open and Trappers use tight. If the findings of this test were truly representative of what happens every time we pull the trigger then multi chokes would never have even been invented.

That's not too surprising, a good 24g steered well can and should do plenty of damage.
