Choke charts are like Bibles.

Everyone has seen one, few have read one, and most are left in the drawer at Travellodge.

You need enough to make good breaks, 1/2 is enough, just, which is probably why so many seem able to live with such a wide range as 1/2 through to Full. I would hazard a guess that the reason you seemed able to live with DTL targets and 1/4 was a combination of you shooting quick, the targets being essentially easy compared to say OT or dare I say it Sportin' and the reality that many so called 1/4 chokes don't throw as such. ;)

The ultimate proof comes from knowing that the best will not trust 1/4 or thereabouts to break everything.
Yeh I used to shoot very fast in those days, well I was a lot younger back then! . :wink:

Briley published that chart some years ago.

I like the video by Gil & Viki Ash that shows that 1/2 choke is the dog's danglers for Sporting clays.

If you have a favoured choke size and manufacturer I suggest you get it/them properly measured against the bore size of the gun you use them in.

I have a 1/4 Briley choke that actually measures 8 thou,not 10 and a 1/2 choke that measures 17 thou not 20.

I also have a Teague 3/8 choke that is spot on 15 thou.

On the other hand perhaps it's better not to get them measured,it may destroy your confidence in their performance.

.4 and .8 (Perazzi measure tenths) so translated it's a tight three-eights and a tight three-quarter. I only use fibre wad cartridges - one brand which I've tested on the pattern plate - and this combined with a barrel selector gives me enough options.

All my guns are fixed choke. I used to have a multichoke for clays but the chap who taught me told me that if I concentrated on pointing the gun in he right direction I wouldn't need to worry about changing chokes.
