Hi All,

Just wondering if any of you use any home made or non shooting branded cleaning products.

I have found white wine vinegar to be excellent for removing build up from chokes easily 25% vinegar to 75% hot water, short soak and job jobbed.

WD 40 also works well as a pre-cleaner, I do NOT use it for lubrication, that's a job for gun oil and not a lot of it at that.

The one I thought I'd give a try this weekend were Toolstations "Trade Wipes" to be honest they were bloody amazing at removing carbon deposits and really quick to use and also smell quite nice and disposable. A tub of 80 is £5 something but I only used 4 or 5 but they are really worth a try To get the build up off the magazine cap took a couple of minutes, gave it a thorough wipe, then went back at it after a minute or so and reckon it took me maybe 20% of the time it normally takes using wire wool!

WD40 is great but there is a much cheaper option for pre clean. Look for something called DP60 on ebay, £2.99 delivered for 500ml and works just as well.

Also instead of buying pre made patches, I bought one of the old style towel rolls (the material ones) on ebay for about £8. Should last me years and tears easily into strips to fit into my jag.

Brake cleaner works very well but it evaporates too quickly.

I've used WD40 for years as a cleaner,it gets rid of or softens most crud.

For stubborn deposits in the barrel,green plastic pan scrubber cut into strips and wrapped around a brush works very well.

An air compressor is useful for blowing the muck away and removing excess lubricant.

I use kitchen paper towels for wiping.

Found the best way to get rid of stubborn stuff in the barrels is spray some vp90 gun cleaner in and let it soak for a while. Then with an ally cleaning rod ground off to 10mm at the hand end in the cordless drill, spin the phosphor bronze brush down them.

Usually boresnake them every outing then spin the brush down every month or so and they sparkle

WD40? Please! It is gummy and water based! If you have a Browning, just watch it rust! My 2003 391 Gold Optima Sporter has never been cleanned and still shoot 1145 FPS as well as Max 3 inch steel loads! The trick is BreakFree CLP the original military Clean Lubricates Penetrates powder disolver since about 1985. I use it on all my pistols, rifles and shotguns. I will post pics later!

I would never use WD40 and leave it on the gun. I do use it down the barrels and leave it to soak for an hour or two and that's about it. As I said, it's good as a pre-clean/soak not for protecting.

I use WD40 for the barrel cleaning but for ported chokes I have found the quickest way is to warm them up a bit with a heat gun and then spray them with oven cleaner, twice, (in the sink) leave a few min's and rinse, works well.

I had a ported old shape 682, cleaned the ports with pipe cleaners; once.
