Do you like being beaten by a girl?

I think men aren't that bothered being beaten by a woman as long as its not "their woman"

You regularly see couples shooting together but are there many out there where the lady regularly out scores her male partner? The only one I can think of is Becky Mackenzie (nee Bream). Most of the other top lady shots shoot with AAA partners, their dads or on their own. And Cheryl if course.

I introduced my husband to clay shooting and at first he wasn't bothered in the slightest that I was better than him but I think he eventually got a bit fed up of shooting lower scores than me - in competition, he could sometimes outshoot me in practice. He will now only shoot practice with me and won't shoot competition. I think he actually prefers rifle shooting anyway.

Couples shooting *can* be a disaster, sometimes you are better shooting by yourself and then compare notes at the end, sometimes! Yes some couples can shoot together no probs but I have also heard of a few blazing rows in the car on the way home (not your car Gnasher  )

No rows about shooting here - Mrs GG has not beaten me yet but I can tell you that I do everything to try and help her improve her shooting, and she knows for sure that the day she beats me I will be first in the queue to congratulate her. Have been beaten by many excellent female shots in the past. Great to see it.

If anybody out there is bothered by it . . . . . just shoot better yourself !

I've never seen a man admit that he'd have a problem if his wife scored more than him at shooting. My husband started shooting after me, and I'm working quite hard to stay slightly ahead. Not sure my six month's lead is going to last very long. I've had three friends say that they don't like going shooting with their partners because if they do better than their husbands the man will sulk the rest of the day and go on at length about how they are really bad at shooting they need to give up.. I am slightly concerned that my husband could say the same thing about me, except that he hasn't beaten me - yet.

The worst cases I've seen are the ones where the man is ostensibly invested in helping his wife shoot, but does all kinds of subtle things that actually hold her back. Doesn't think she should get a gun of her own, because: "she can use mine". "She can use whatever shells I've got" despite the fact she'd be better off with something much lighter. "We'll have lessons together to save money" -and go at his speed, not hers. "She doesn't need a licence, I've got one" which means "I control when we go shooting and you can't go without me." The nicest men can be guilty of this, but the ones who really aren't doing it (subconsciously) on purpose are the ones who support their partner when they take the initiative or even when this is explained to them. "Maybe we could get you one of these," said the man whose wife was trying my gun and was chatting to me about making shooting fun for women. He then followed up with: "Did you say there was one ins [local gun shop]?" Nice chap, obviously keen to share his love of the sport with the women he loves.

My brother and his wife got their SGC's a couple of weeks ago.  On Saturday he bought her a gun but didn't get one for himself.  His reasoning was that she struggles with the weight of the shotguns that she has access to (they come shooting with us and use ours), but he doesn't, so it was more important to get her a lightweight gun while he carried on borrowing one.

Myself and the OH started shooting at the same time (late last year).  At first he was much much better than me, but now we're much closer and on occasion I beat him.  He doesn't seem to have a problem with it.

On a slightly different tack I wonder about father and sons shooting together sometimes as when we do I am concious of how Harry (15) is shooting, which if not well can distract me from my own performance. On the few occassions when we have shot on different squads I find that I can concentrate better as I'm not worrying about how he is doing.

Might try and shoot separately on a few few upcoming comps to see if it makes a difference to his (and my) scores. He's not beaten me at trap...yet! but I know it's only a matter of time and this may be the way to make it happen.

Shooting week in week out with people you know (other than practice) or worse still family is IMO a bad idea for the reasons you state. I have known people who have been stuck like this and found it very hard to get out of.

Shooting is a paradox, on one side it is an individual pursuit, on the other it is a very social sport, unfortunately these two halves do not mix IF you want to be competitive and improve as a shooter. Generally you should shoot with people who are much better then yourself as this tends to help you improve, IF you prefer the social half of shooting, then just ignore what I just said

See my sig :)

Only kidding, Matt is spot on I like the social side on a sat when I practice as there a great bunch but sundays are for comps and that's for shooting not for chatting.

Today I had a great day...attended a Corporate Clay Day at Ham Cross in sunny Wiltshire (Will Thatcher' s place) and we had a competition stand, nine targets (3 driven, 3 left to right quartering and 3 right to left quick grouse like targets) full use of gun. With an audience of my team and another I hit all 9 with my first barrel so getting 9/9...God it felt good!!!!

Got to the end and Will announced a shoot off to settle the prizes...only it was actually a shoot off to settle second place...between two men who had both hot 8/9...so I was Top Lady...or was I Top Gun...interestingly Will said I couldn't be Top Gun but surely then the phrase for the male winner should be Top Man (not the shop!)...

Anyhow it was the best feeling ever and whatever the why's and where for' s I shall enjoy my bottle of champagne that I won!!!! I THINK all the men were pleased for me....the women definitely were  :girlcrazy:

Why could you not be top gun?

I do not understand.

Well done ..cracking shooting.
