I watched them both shoot at Claythorne Lodge at the World Fitasc 2003, he was a teenager then but his fatherwas quite handy.

Well done to all who took part & all who won :)

Roll on next year,  fancy a go myself   ( dont put a bet on me though)

:santa:

Well Dubai was fun, after all the anticipation and speculation last year I thought I would give it a quick summary...

Weather played a factor for sure, if you shot layouts 1 and 3 in the wind it did bring some targets in BUT it also blew sand in your face at 35mph! AND it also pushed some targets in to the ground much earlier than the course setters planned, so if you shot layouts 2 and 4 it pushed some targets away from you at an alarming rate.

I didn't think there were too many extreme distance targets (wind affected ones aside), there were plenty of very difficult sim pairs though and this is what really caused most of the damage to scores. I would say there were 4 or 5 sim pairs across the 4 layouts that were too extreme and could have been tamed a little, especially considering these were also badly affected by the wind, peg 2 on layout 1 for example, fast quartering away target that hit the ground 20 yards from the trap and the other target was a left to right (fast ish) low curler that hit the ground very quickly, watched a whole squad only shoot one target of the pair, they did not try for both.

Hospitality was second to none, the food was excellent and never really ran out, we even had lobster tails for lunch on one of the days, full cold buffet, full hot buffet and dessert section, not your average bacon sarnie stuff at all.

Refereeing was pretty good and from what I saw, was consistent and fair, a few shooters tried it on but got nowhere, one guy on my squad accidentally loaded an empty shell, ref just shrugged his shoulders and called 2 zero's!!

Could they improve the event, probably, maybe having all the layouts on the same side, that way the wind would affect everyone the same way, and they need to put the traps on pallets or something more solid, they did have a tendency to sink a little during the day. Would I go back? In a heart beat, it was hard, it pushed you all the way and if you did make the money, you felt you had actually achieved something. But this is just my view on the week, I am sure they will be others who viewed it very differently...

for those that are interested I will be doing a full report for Clayshooter (the freebie), Clayshooting USA and Sporting Clays USA and Sporting Shooter in the UK. Busy tapping away trying to sort it all out now... oh why do everybodys deadlines fall at the same time!!! arrggggg :)

No doubt it was a very wonderful event, with traps insecurely situated in the sand, no account of the naturally occurring winds and direction , simultaneous targets that you could only get one shot off at, it sounds joyful and no doubt the magazine reports will reflect that . A fabulous event with a fabulous prize fund paid for by the unsuspecting British motorist.

I eagerly await reading the accounts from ordinary as well as the better known shooters but one thing that is pretty damn clear is that the targets weren't the same for everybody !

The Sheikh and the behind the scenes purse(s) funding this new mega event have to be applauded and supported by us all but lets also point out that if the event was free to enter (a la last year), then you can do whatever you like and you don't even have to pretend it's a competition but if people are paying a decent figure to enter plus the associated costs and time off work etc, to attend, then you'd better set the targets so people have time to fire at them.

Either that or you'd end up earning the event the reputation of Lucky Luke.

I think most people enjoyed the challenging targets, warm weather and great hospitality. i also enjoyed picking up a wad of notes :)

The sandstorm wasn't quite what I was after, nor the random rainstorm, but I'll take that over the cold rain and hail I've arrived back in England to be confronted with.

Hammy, believe me when I say the food was worth the entry fee on its own, especially when you can eat as much as me  :sarcastic:

There was a suggestion box and a meeting to discuss what shooters had put in, so no doubt they will learn and improve it for next year.
