what is the law regarding shooting game on private land (with permission) but in the vicinity of public footpath that runs through the land. I know about the fifty foot from a highway but what about paths. ?

found this its a pdf download might be of interest to you?

scroll down to the "shooting near rights of way (e.g. footpaths & bridleways)" section it should tell you what you need to know.

basically I think you can actually shoot from and/or over "right of way" footpaths as long as you allow people to "pass and re-pass without hindrance"  and the same goes for the person/s on the footpath, they are not allowed to cause you any hindrance.

download it, it makes for some interesting reading

OR, you could look up the Highways Act, 1980, Section 161  :-

Briefly, it is an Offence without lawful authority or excuse to discharge a firearm within 50 feet of the centre of a Highway AND in  consequence of which a user of the Highway is INJURED, INTERRUPTED or ENDANGERED.

So, if you are shooting from a Public Footpath, try to avoid shooting the Village *****  !

I'm not sure a footpath is a highway..

completely legal to shoot from or near footpaths (all other things being equal) BUT expect pita antis at every turn...

For the purposes of this Offence, it is.

There is the Offence of Trespass, (armed)  if the shooter does not have permission to be on land adjacent to the footpath.
