Well, what a disaster. Apart from shooting quite badly and missing targets that I would normally be dusting, I spent most of last night in absolute agony. I find it alien to shoot ALL stands 'gun up', but I am unable to get the stock into my shoulder properly and so 'gun up' it had to be. After 9 stands and 54 targets, I struggled to even lift a sausage buttie. So I have made the hard decision NOT to shoot until after my course of treatment. I will still go to the local shoot, but I will hold the coats and spectate. Whichever course of treatment, it would appear that they are not without problems. Talking to a Guy at the shoot yesterday, he had the steroid jabs, they were just a quick fix and he ended up having the op. Now some 10 years later he is awaiting a second op, on the same shoulder. Not really what I wanted to hear, but I am unable to continue with the, at times, intolerable pain.

sorry to hear this keith I sympathise my friend

single malt. :)

I see your located around the north west Lancashire area. Don't know what hospital or doctor you have been seeing. There is a consultant thought in the area who's the best shoulder surgeon in the country not far away..  (no it's not me)

Unfortunately can't seem to PM if you can get one through I might  able to reply.

I think it was the effects of the single malt that landed me in trouble on Sunday morning. Either the single malt or the pink shorts !

Thanks for that Paul, I think we are all struggling with the PM situation. If anyone can manage to send a PM it appears that you can answer them. Problem lies with sending the first PM.

Just a thought Guys, but apparently there's a system called "email" where you can send each other messages over the wires, just by touching the buttons on a computer. Have you ever thought about signing up for this service and exchanging these electronic addresses?

Alternatively, there's always the "Telling-bone", and I notice that most of you are from up north, so at least you will be able to understand each other's accents.

Just trying to help and bring you guys together.        :giverose:

Westley, try extracting the Beretta Auto (slowly) and I'm sure it will help with your discomfort? Must make re-loading tricky where it is currently located?

Yes, thank you for that. Perhaps I can PM my Email address, rather than splash it all over an open Forum. With regards to the auto, the barrel has been put through a superb browning treatment as opposed to a reblacking !

unfortunately the injections rarely fix the problem long term..... Usually just temporary relief. Hope you get it all sorted soon.

Thanks Nick, I had heard that the only real answer is the op. Having said that, a friend has started with the same problem again, some 10 years after the op. Mind you that would put me in my eighties or possibly a box  !  whichever is the sooner ?

everyone is different. You might not get the same problem as your friend. I hope you get the correct treatment and that the problem resolves so you can once again enjoy your shooting.

All the best.

my tame physio said regarding my sciatica "avoid / delay any op as Long as possible"

just saying

yes as any orthopaedic surgery runs the risk of accelerated degenerative (osteoarthritis) changes, which just makes things worse. I've had 3 arthroscopies on my left knee which caused early onset OA and have recently had major surgery (tibial osteotomy - realignment of the leg) to delay a total knee replacement as I am way too young. Also, back surgery is not always as successful as other joint surgery and is potentially quite a risky op. Sounds like Westley has shoulder problems which generally has better outcomes and it sounds like he might be beyond conservative (non surgical) treatment however that is for him, his Physio and his surgeon to decide I guess. Surgery should always be last resort.

Hi Guys and Girl's

Westley ! For what it's worth I was only given a 30% chance of success before the Op ,My surgeon as said to me quite a few times "he didn't know me personally but knows people like me" ha'ha

What I mean is no more crawling under floor boards and if you move house again ,get someone to do it for you , I was advised not to do any physical stuff for two years

Well I had the Op in Jan and been back shooting about a month now  with no pain or ill effects so far !!

Not sure how you can do it  on the forum but Pm or email if you want to discuss.

All the best

Dave

Bit of an update, had the steroid jab in the shoulder this morning. I was a bit apprehensive, but I have to say that I have felt a bigger prick on a sporting layout (usually after dropping one or both of a last pair).  So, the only way is up, as they say. I have being doing my exercises, but I went with a friend to get his new gun yesterday and I could not even lift it to my shoulder. I have been assured that after a week or so, I should be able to lift a gun once more. As to hitting anything with it, ..................well, that is another story. I have a 20 and 28 bore in reserve, just in case. As warned, the pain started a few hours after the jab. I am being taken to the CLA Game Fair for my Birthday on Saturday, so will enjoy that.

Once again , I am indebted to the Forum Members for sharing their experiences and words of encouragement and should we ever meet, you can still only see a pair from OUTSIDE the stand ! Seriously though, THANKS Guys and Gals it has been appreciated. K.

Forgot to mention that I met a Guy at the Hospital, who also had shoulder problems. He claimed it was a work related injury. Transpires he was a Building Society counter clerk in Liverpool. He spent so much time with his hands raised above his head it has caused his shoulder injuries !

Well, God Bless the NHS ! I had an appointment with a Specialist today, the outcome of which, is, I have been put onto his list of ops for Saturday. I know Nick said that the op should be a last resort, well it is near Southport and I suppose that place is a 'Last Resort' (even the tide is too frightened to come in). Downside, no shooting for 6 months, that will make a total of 12 months out of the game. I have been told that I can break things in gently by shooting some trap using an auto, to ease the effect on my shoulder. So, pre op tomorrow and look forward to being a cut above the rest by Saturday evening. Once again, thanks to all who have offered advice and encouragement, it really has been appreciated. Keith.

Best wishes Westley, will think of you on Saturday.

I imagine that conservative (Physio) management of your shoulder wasn't an option.... Best of luck and a speedy recovery/return to shooting. Nick

Sure you will be OK

Just need to take it easy after the Op no more crawling under floor boards etc

Them days are gone ,at least for a year or two!

My Surgeon just Laughed at me when I asked him when could I get back shooting

For what it's worth my semi stays in the cabinet now and I'm back useing my K-80 and Shooting may be better than ever

Take care Kieth

Dave
