just for fun (and education for me) what are the do's and donts whilst pheasant shooting.

On the peg check round for position of other guns, flag men and pickers up. It's your job not to shoot them. It is also your job not to raise and lower the gun in line with them. Shoot only birds with sky around them, approaching only you and not your neighbours (once is a laugh, twice is a smack in the mouth). Show respect for the slain, wait to ensure your birds are collected. Listen to the pep talk before commencement, that will tell you local rules.

question

on live peg gun loaded but safety on, butt on hip barrells pointing up. Is that ok cos that's what I did and nothing was said (I hate to break any rules on etiquette)

is it ok / better to peg my dog a few yards back from me or is the gunshot louder there than at heel, she seemed perfectly happy if a little confused as not been THAT close to me shooting before.

is wearing a cartridge belt the done thing at Pheasant shoot or will I just look like an arse

No issues with cartridge belts, a good spot for non toxic cartridges to separate them from others.

Gun held as you outline is fine, clay safety rules will set you in good stead, if in doubt don't shoot (whether too close or too distant - if it's an easy shot it's too close)

Peg dog infront looking back at you

Cartridge belt is best way to gouge stock without really trying. Your arms will tire pointing upwards. Consider how to reload [shells in left pocket], gun broken resting on gunslip. You'll embarrass yourself by catching shells at first then looking for bin. Tidy up afterwards.

catching shells, jeez your right never thought of that. Plus will have to remember not to move pegs after each shot, that could be really embarrassing

Yeah,    and you do not get the chance to shout 'PAUL' either !

Don't panic, Capt. Mainwareing, Don't Panic, I will give you a crash course. Are you intending to shoot 'Beaters Day' this season ?

You must be jokeing? if not I'd recommend you ask the shoot owner or captain first.
Black ones are fine as long as they're Section 1 and hold up to 10 shells so you can have a go at the next pegs wounded birds.

I still say for anyone who's not sure. If you are invited to a pheasant shoot ask if an auto is acceptable,on all the organized pheasant shoots i've know over the last 16yrs autos what ever colour have been a big no no. I've only ever seen them used on beaters days and then only buy game keepers. I'm only saying better to ask than be sent home.

only a philistine would even dare turn up to a game shoot with a monstrosity of an auto. imo
