am thinking of buying a semi auto  never owned one ,  what's best for sporting clays , I like the idea of shims to aid fit etc. , any info would be appreciated . make model  length , cheers . :nyam:

Hi there,

Lots of Semi's to choose from. Beretta make some nice ones A400 etc. Benelli make very nice ones.

I personally like the Fabarm Velocity XLR 5.  I don't own one yet, but have shot one several times.  Adjustable stock and high rib, very nice to shoot.

Also come in true left handed as well.

With Semi Autos, a 32 inch barrel makes the gun HUGE, so unless you are quite tall, I would go for a 28-30 inch barrel.

and thats the truth! my 30" benelli S/A is much longer than my 32" beretta O/U so much so i struggle to fit it in my safe!

If you're not sure and want a cheap entry into the world of semi-autos you can get a hatsan escort new for under £400, i have just got the newer composite stock model and it comes with a couple of shims and a set of 5 extended chokes, you can't go wrong at that price.

I prefer gas operated rather than recoil operated, much more pleasant to shoot.

Beretta's very rarely go wrong.

Sorry I can't do it.

why do you want an auto rather than an OU. ...?

I am glad you asked that.

more reliable

Dont eject shells all over the ground

dont eject shells at other trap shooters and dent there wood

have two barrels and therfore two different chokes

safer to handle as everyone can see its empty when its broken

easier to clean

Why do you want an auto ?

You sound like a stuck record, at least an auto shoots to the same place every time.

With all respect,The guy that started this thread was after some info about semi autos, the people to give advice are owners of semi autos, if you don't own an auto or are not a big fan of them then you're on the wrong page.

Beretta would be my choice, use to use a model 390 for all my shooting about 15 years ago, just have to keep them clean and they work well, forget to keep them clean and they jam up simple really

fare point however the op stated he was "thinking" of buying an auto i was merely enquiring as to his reasons for "thinking" about buying one as by the use of the word "thinking" i assumed he wasn't sure and thought maybe we could assist with the "thinking" process.

The problem is though you just have a one track mind.

I know mate i am an opinionated kind of bloke. I don't like autos i don't see the point, i don't like multi choke i don't like denim i don't like football no that's not true i detest football. I could go on but i am off to bed.

No offence intended to folk who were denim the rest i stand by :)

I believe that semi auto's have their uses both on clays and in the field and for that reason have 2, both Berettas'. Just be warned, it would appear from reading the threads on here, that if you intend to take an auto to a clay ground, then you are obliged to be far more safety concious than the o/u shooters. You will have to engage someone to walk ahead of you carrying a red flag and by all accounts, that should have been provided when you bought the gun. You will also need a seperate flag and suitable pole to enter into the open breech of your auto, just to show all of the partially sighted o/u users that you gun is actually empty. They seem to have difficulty in seeing the OPEN breech. You will have the same difficulty in seeing that there O/U's are empty when they remove them CLOSED from a gunslip, but they will not have any such flowing flags !  You would also be advised to obtain a magnetic cartridge pick up device or you may consider a small spinning rod with a magnet on a line to retrieve your spent shells as you will not be able to swing your gun around in all directions in order to get your empties in the bins provided. But, apart from these minor bigoted set backs, enjoy your auto, safe in the knowledge that you will probably be more safety concious than some of your critics.  Remember it is NOT the gun that is dangerous, but PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not buy one with a release trigger !

P.S. would have posted this earlier, but I was watching the footie !

You wont go wrong with the Beretta or Fabarm autos, if your just dipping your toe in have a look at the Armsan range a good price and look well made. Have tried a friends Armsan and it left a good impression.
