I shot the blue ESP course today. After the STR I feared it would be ridiculous, whereas it was simply very tough. 😆

Sadly I never found three targets at all, which I can’t recall doing on one shoot for a very long time. So that was 12 away right there. Then with only about three straights, it was a case of letting the score dribble away all round. I would say there are maybe two fairly easy stands out of 14. The rest range from tricky to very hard. Finished on 77. Richard Faulds was leading it on 87 when I left after lunch.

The ground is lovely, organisation great and I switched to pizza for lunch which was very good. Red course tomorrow, which I know nothing about as yet.

Are there any stand out 'big birds' like stands 8 and 11 at the recent open? Is it mainly speed and angles to catch people out or lots of big gaps?

Same for us too,  Blue course.  Started really well, 5 stands in and a few straights and a few 1 away then we got the the open field and the wheels fell off and kept on going!  So many dropping targets, coming in at you from a long distance away and the sun was shining on them and didn’t/couldn’t see them.  Ended up with 1s and 2s then got to the driven and shot the last target which saved an embarrassing smiley face.  Then 3 more stands which were fine, but I then lost one of my ear plugs and just didn’t concentrate on targets as I was faffing about trying to get spare ones out of bag etc and was so hot and bothered by then I was glad to finish.  A difficult course for us mere mortals and I thought our whole squad had bad scores but when looking at the others coming in we hadn’t disgraced ourselves to badly.  Red course tomorrow so hoping for better results.

Plenty of water, apples, Haribo sweets about, from stand 6 then every 2/3 stands.  On the Blazer stand, (at the end of the field) you are shooting from a platform, 4 rabbits, thrown as singles with full use of gun (and you need full use 😂)  coming from all angles,  but the very nice people there had lovely cold water melon to eat, thank you!

We too had pizza today, very nice and a lovely ice cream to finish.

Only one monster battue, which the ref gave me one hit on, not sure I did.. RF didn’t find it! It’s not so much the big distance as the fact it turns edgey just as you want to get on it. Put it this way, if you miss the easy first bird, double barrel it. As Donna says, the difficulty comes mainly in the form of long quartering edgey stuff.

The sim driven stand, my whole squad was hitting 50% or less, so I was glad to straight it. As I walked out of the cage, the ref said “no bird, nothing established”. Totally shocked and whole squad had no idea why. (I have witnessed the joy of this guy before..). So having walked back in I was very glad to smack the extra pair.

Well done for keeping it together, Will.

Sounds pretty relentless. Maybe making the latest Open look more like a normal Sunday registered  :D

I had a nightmare on the driven, they were filling traps up when we got there so quite a long wait, then ref said “I’m sitting back here so I can see the targets so you need to shout”. Well, I shouted and shouted and sometimes they came, sometimes they didn’t and sometimes they came when I hadn’t even shouted!

But, lovely weather, shooting with friends so we had a laugh on the way round and we are staying in a great hotel which has a swimming pool so had a dip when we got back and cooled down, then got talking to a lady whose hubby was shooting today also, so when he came home we all sat around and commiserated with each other over what had been hit and lost!!

I started off fairly well but was unable to secure a straight so lots of 7's. Hit one of the far battues (Stand 5 I think it was). In fact think I hit every target. Let a few more trickle away over the 2nd half of the course so was happy to finish on 71. That battue was the only extreme target - the rest was just consistently firm. Some of the whites coming down the bank were tricky to pick up in the sunshine and light background.

Nicely organised event and the area around the lodge and pavilion was looking good. Nice air conned Land Cruisers to shuttle you to and from the courses. Toilets were a bit sparse on Blue - think I saw just two and quite a gap in between them. Enjoyed my Beretta Pizza for lunch - very tasty. Think I will deffo pop back to watch the final on Sunday.

I shot the red and badly 54 I think.  Long quartering birds do not suit me at all, I blanked a stand of those. My gun had an altercation with a  hedge which was almost the same height as me 😂.  The next squadded shoot I do I am going to shoot with friends, everyone just wandered off after they shot.  I had the Browning Pizza which I thought was very good and two ice creams and sat in a deckchair in the shade for about 4 hours.

I did the Red today and joined a small number of people who found it worse than the blue. I was terrible on the first few stands, got so cross had to sit alone for a while. This level of shoot sure pushed most of my squad to the edge at some point. A rubbish 70, where I hoped for 80+. Never mind. I dropped seven in the last two stands, but so did RF so it wasn’t a doddle.

Verdict on whole event? Too tough all round. Maybe these world champs should be in one respect but because they want 1200 shooters of average ability to prop up the top 300, the course could be easier. After all, there is a super final to sort out the top few.. One thing I have said for years is DON’T register these events. Then at least we can shoot it with a wry smile and forget the effect on our averages.
