Sporting Shoots; where- and how was it? (2018)

Nearly went there. Wish I had.

It was a step up from the normal gunsite. But still very enjoyable and didn't seem to punish the lower classes. As stated before a very good trick if you can pull it off. Which it seems Sean can almost at will. Really one of the best shoots I've been to in a while.

I did the sporting at Honesberie on Saturday. 100 birds over 14 stands. Really enjoyed it. Never shot there before, but was impressed with the variety of targets.

Thought I'd take a look at this new shoot, I was very pleased to see a new weekend opportunity, It was a nice layout in the Surrey woodland.

Some of the targets were what you would expect and some were on the tough side (for me.) Two stands comprising high floaters, up to 50-60 yards in my estimation, midis and standards, these were unnatural shots for a pigeon shooter like me because they were slow so you need less lead right?  but how much less? I missed plenty of these although they were hittable and I'd like to practise on them until I get them right. I felt under gunned with 1/4 and 1/2 chokes, next time I'll use 1/2 and 1/2. I shot about 9 down on my average, high score was 91 which says a lot.

It's early days for this shoot and we must be supportive if we want it to become a regular event. Teething problems? - a shortage of scorers meant a few of the scorers had to multi task which they did cheerfully and efficiently and there were no complaints.

The proof is in the numbers, as yesterday there were 186 registered and at least 25 non registered entries despite the fact that St Dials and Westfield also had reg sporting on, Barbury held a reg Compak and it was the big day at the Masters.

The hubby and I went there at the end of last year and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was a long trek for us but well worth the visit and we will be going back. What he achieved in the amount of space he had and the quality of the targets was superb. Something for everyone but nothing ridiculously stupid. I don’t mind being beaten by a good target, just don’t like being beaten by an eyesight test or a high hedge!

Yes the big entry is slightly against it for me as its a long day after a long drive. I'll nip down with the foot and mouth signs before the next one..

Very pretty piece of ground with targets for all abilities. Struggled with the two stands you mentioned with the high targets, but that's down to me not reading them correctly as they where all hitable if you put the shot in the right place. Looking forward to the next shoot on the 27th

That was the best round of clays I've shot in a while at Gunsite yesterday, thoroughly enjoyable compared to some of the rubbish dished up at other places.

Nice to shoot at some stuff that needed a good gap as well.

EJC STR was a bad start to the Easter parade for me. Good course, lovely weather.

Short version. Shot like a tit.

Longer version, featuring mitigation.. Started well on first two layouts which were closer targets. 23 and 22. Second two layouts in much more open ground with longer targets. Disastrous 16 and 18. Realised too late that I was way in front of all the long stuff, which is what I do when I haven’t shot for a few weeks. Spent this week full-on at work and never thought about shooting, so created same rusty mindset. Shot a couple of targets after I finished and smashed them by cutting back a chunk. Just out of calibration! Oh well, glad I found that today before all the sporting shoots coming up this weekend. Restraint..

Spent yesterday scoring at JBD Sporting's 100 Registered ESP, it was as ever a marvel to see such variety and good targets being squeezed into such an implausibly compact area, nice to bump into Schmokin and Natasha Vadasz who shot on our squad. Lots of very good local shooters there with a decent entry because it was good Friday, it was won on 96 which was about spot on as even very close simple looking stuff was being missed by excellent shooters. 

If you're anywhere near this place you ought to try one of James's reg shoots, perfect if you don't like walking much but want good targets.

Knackered. I did Southdown 25 pool shoot and 120 Masters event. Then went to Horne on the way home, which was gratuitous really..

Best targets of the day were on Southdown pool shoot probably. Did a reasonable 21/25 warm up. (Did well to focus after a heated discussion with a Mr rude and angry while booking on, because I booked 4 spaces).

Anyway, the main event was OK, but lots of quartering edgey stuff. I thought the shoot lacked a few good long targets for sure. I started a bit tattily, then had a disastrous 2/8, missing all 4 of a quartering orange in front, plus two of the overheads because I got cross. Ruined a decent card. But I dug in and only dropped 1 clay over the next 6 stands to finish on 105/120. It did need to be 110 to be decent in AA. Sigh.. Saw Schmokinn, Sian, Donna and others. Sian was shooting very well when I saw her. 

Horne was really tricky again! We were all tired and it needed great care and concentration. 85 May have been a bit higher if I had been fresh, who knows. Not a stellar day, again.. lovely weather though.

Southdown for us today too, I shot 96 (80%) which is my best score EVER! But am gutted, we started at stand 15 and worked our way up the lane and was shooting really well until I got to stand 3.  Up on the platform and the barrier was quite high (for me anyway) and the second target was a low bird.  I got angry as I couldn’t get my gun low enough over the barrier until I stepped back slightly which gave me more room and I started hitting them, but by then the damage was done and stupidly I was still annoyed at stand 2 then we had a very long wait on 1 as they were filling traps and I dropped a few there.  All in all I dropped 10 or 11 targets on those 3 stands alone but it was still my best score so going the right way. Phil shot 106 so was a happy bunny too but again, rued the stupid ones he missed as it was a 4 way tie for 1st! 

Barrow for us on Friday and after a very long and tiring journey with the traffic had a fairly good shoot. Won ladies so,wasn’t too bad a weekend. 

Lovely to see you Will and yes, Sian shot great. Bebo deserves a mention too, first time at sport trap and a great 70 well done!

Just given Tony sausages and baked beans for dinner because that is all I am capable of doing at the moment.  Rounded off the long weekend shooting with Sportrap at Southdown with my head in the right place 86/100 which gave me ladies.  Had a go on the pool shoot at the beginning and end of the day.  Suffice it to say the end of the day I might as well have been waiving a flower around instead of a gun.  Shot enough to take ladies in the sporting 105/120 although when I think about some missed it makes me twitch.   Watched Steve Scott do 25 on the pool shoot which was lovely to watch and watched the shoot off for the overall high gun which Chris Childerhouse won  after a fair few returns between him and Simon Fenner.  Good end to the day.
