Yeeeeeeeeee  Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ! Capvern tomorrow afternoon :)

First time out this year and a month since last time out hopefully get three or four rounds in at UT weather is set fair and sunny with a temperature which should be about 18C with very light breeze. Am I looking forward to this :)

Going to experiment with a slightly higher comb position and moving my hand back slightly on the fore end see how it works out for a couple of rounds just to scratch and itch as it were.

We don't even get weather like that in the summer John!!!!

Its not unusual to get weather like this at this time of year ...but two years ago we had sub zero temperatures for two weeks solid with night time lows of minus 15C... that is not the norm the locals were turning blue :)

Bit of a breeze but it could be different down Capvern as it fifty miles away but the sun is out so that is a good start!

Thought I'd have a look and see where you are and see that there is a place called Condom just north of there!

Saturday will be my first day shooting in almost a month too, cant wait! Got new glasses to try out on Saturday, then 100 dtl on Sunday.

Did you get to try dtl yet John?

Blimey Rob......DTL!......just the thought of it scares the daylights out of me these days mate! You really do need nerves of bloody steel to shoot that!

Well John how you get on ?

Were taking bets as to if higher comb and or holding your forend had any effect :)

Haha, ya its a tough game. Im not that good at it yet though. I find its less nerve-racking when you drop 15 birds over 100! What do you shoot Les? OT I am guessing?

But Im getting there with it, hoping the new glasses will be a good help. GOing to try a higher hold point also, maybe a foot or so off the trap house roof, rather than having the bead on it.

hi rob

I give you 12 mths then you will see the light. Trap is were it is at. :)

too long on dtl and its harder to get good at fast trap imo.

try the high hold but dont go above a foot or so especialy at degla as you now know those targets can drop pretty quick if its at all windy then your Iin a heap of trouble.

Well answers in order

Robert. ..yes town gives its name to  Rubber Johnnies !

Rob.. Unfortunately not almost today just as was packing up some one suggested a round so I rebuilt my gun only to be told the trap was off ! Some time soon though because there are some competitions early in the year.

Ian... I did lift the comb by 5mm and drew my left hand back about two inches on the fore end... result not really a great difference but I think a bit better than before and had a 23 on my first round, which for me is good. I did have a very frustrating day though because I shot my second round immediately after the first and some twerp logged on the stand but never shot so what happened was the shot order was all over the place, it is computer controlled, and it completely upset the concentration and ended up shooting more than 25 clays but lost count of my score but it was about 20. Then a 19 and the last round a total disaster of about 15. The problem with my last round was a combination of one round too many and a well meaning seated coach. I melted the first two them missed the next couple at which point the coach offered his advice and instead of just concentrating on the target I started thinking about everything and missed far more than I would if he had kept schtum, he meant well though but I think I was tired more than anything else I had shot three rounds in an hour and a half and the fourth was being greedy! I was about to leave after three but someone suggested a round of DTL and I said yes but the trap was off so it was back to the UT... with very bad results. So all in all a bit of a conundrum because the first round was a really good confident start to the day. I think I need to shoot three rounds with a break between each. Today was one hundred straight targets between two schemes no breaks in between in under two hours .

A good 23 by anyones standards john, ah yes the well meaning coach can really **** you up, I never listen to anyone who does not know my personality and my shooting style / aproach.

To be fair he meant well and thought he had spotted my fault which I think he had! I was moving too quickly after calling the target but it started me thinking which is not good for me... I get worse rather than better when I start thinking! :) I do think I shot too many rounds too fast though I was very tired driving back and I have a very slight headache now. I have to learn though, I love to shoot and I do too much when the opportunity arises and sometimes my scores suffer. I suspect if I had shot three rounds with a half hour between each my second and third rounds would have been better and no terrible fourth which sort of disappointed me and spoiled the final feeling because you tend not remember the good 23 on the first but you do remember the bad 15 on the last  :) never mind give it a week! :)

Always next week john, thats what keeps us going.

Russian coaches John used to make their shooters do three rounds non-stop in order to expose their weaknesses. Endurance training is used now to increase resilience it seems with 1000/day not unknown.

Wow, not with my back. But if i was fitter 1k per day would be heaven.

Judging from the physique of some prominent shooters I say that 100 targets and 2-3 hours in the gym every day would be the hot set up if endurance is an actual goal.  I understand that 1K targets/day is not an rare regimen, but it is just at silly to think it's remotely a considered approach with the data that is available in the 21st Century.  My guess would be that the CV/PS (the basis of endurance) benefits derived from 1K targets is banging close to Zero.

Or, I might just be misunderstanding 40UP's comment

Could be wrong but I think Fred was referring to mental endurance rather than physical?

Being able to keep concentration over a thousand targets must be a *****. I struggle after about 20!

I'm sure 40UP will be along shortly to explain.

Hi 40UP

I did four rounds straight and to be honest it did show up my weakness! I started well and was doing OK at rounds two and three but tired and started to rush things rather than keep my nice slow regimented discipline and lost concentration ! You know when I shoot my Browning I can feel no recoil what so ever, she shoots as sweet as a nut, but it is there because I have a slightly woozy feeling in me bonce just now, 1000 targets in one day I would be in bed ... or hospital ! :)

For the record I raised the comb about 5 or 6mm and moved my left hand back two inches... did it make a difference? Well the hand movement speeded my gun movement but I don't think the comb made much difference to be honest, but I get a good look at the target so I am leaving it where it is .

High volume training seems to include many recent Olympic gold medalists so it's difficult to argue against. The objective seems to be to induce mental oblivion. They go on the line, switch on and do what they do all day everyday. We all know what contemplation of the outcome does for the action of the present. It is far removed from shooting clays for enjoyment. That's Olympic sport for you. I hear of 150,000 shells/year and 3 hour stints on the line and another 3 hours in the afternoon.
