Getting started in clay shooting, a new short series. Episode 1, getting started.
Nice start Lloyd.

Got a feeling we may have chatted about this before somewhere, but seeing as you're going from scratch here, eventually do you reckon you're ever likely to do a vid from the point of view of when you feel like you want to move on to something more substantial in gun terms? A lot of newbies start of with the classics,... B525, Silver Pig, ATA, etc., for around a grand or so, and when they get a handle on how to shoot a little better and see advances, they might want to move onto something off the next round up, possibly a 725, Blaser, something like that, kind of tickling the 2-3k second hand market?

From my perspective, if I was wanting to move from my lovely, lovely 525, I'd know how to shoot but I'm not sure I'd know what I'm looking for in terms of feel or other things that experienced shooters on here always seem to talk about and seemingly know when a gun is right for them... at least without spending thousands trying all and sundry until you get a fit for you!

Be nice to have a stable of that second level of gun models to be able to fall back on to a/b as a starting point if the time came.

I am actually planning to cover this in a future episode in the series.

1-3 are done and will come out through December. Ep 4 onwards I'm planning on covering 1st gun, cartridge and choke choice, and guns to consider in the higher price brackets.

But.. but... but.. The trade! They'd be out of a future. And those 2-3k second handers have to come from somewhere 😁

Please everyone keep trying as many guns as you can afford. The trade needs you!

Now if only someone would sell me that 'only seen few shells' DT11 black at less than 3k I'd be sorted.

What do you need a DT11 black for? Get a nice DT10 for under 3k.

I wouldn't say I need one, but a DT is sort of an itch I've yet to scratch. You're absolutely right about a DT10 being the more sensible choice and around for reasonable money. I also quite fancy some of the ASE's I've seen, each with stunning wood (was the selection better those days?).

The DT11 black being the newest and latest, I certainly wouldn't say no to one. I shoot a second hand 692 black, and I like its features such as the carbon fibre rib. The DT11 black shares those and I do think it looks like a lovely clay smashing machine. I know it isn't the gun that's keeping me from straighting a round of Olympic skeet though :)

The ASEs were hand made in the same workshop as the SO sidelock guns. Not in the main factory as are the DTs, So I expect they did.

Mind you,  I've seen some examples of very nice wood on  both  DT10's and 11's.  I have  a stock I used on a DT10 I no longer have that's pretty nice.

I'm not letting good advice go to waste. As luck would have it, I'm eying a 28" DT10 Trident, with Skeet-skeet barrels. It is an all black version, with (only) the golden Beretta logo and "DT10, Trident" wording on the underside of the action. I am curious as to whether it's a "Fitasc" as mentioned above. I doubt it, as Fitasc shooters probably wouldn't benefit from skeet barrels? I've read that some trap versions came blued as standard but again, with skeet barrels it isn't likely a trap gun, so am not sure what to make of it. Not having interchangeable chokes would limit me (although I mostly shoot Olympic and Sporting skeet), but does make a great excuse for owning another gun.

I've seen your review of the DT10 and am curious to hear your thoughts.

Lloyd, interesting in the mount on face before shoulder bit that you're expecting stick on, but do you ever shoot shoulder in and face off stock for a sliiiightly quicker bird where you don't have time for the full fitasc type, stock out of shoulder mount? As an example, watched a few BH videos where he doesn't do the newbie full mount but just drops off the face for speed/efficiency and wondering what your thoughts/processes are if you do that also, as that means you can't go face/shoulder as in your vid, as far as I can see anyway?

(just curious, although I suspect you either shoot full mounted or completely out of shoulder to maintain your face/shoulder regimen)

It's not a regimen, I learned to mont the gun that way and it's a way of cementing cheek weld discipline for new shooters. Once you have developed a repeatable mount, muscle memory takes over. I only shoot from a mounted gun for Trap, all other disciplines I shoot from a low gun.

But you don't drop out in degrees at all though, it's either full down or full mount?

(mate, I've only been shooting two years, I'll still take every bit of advice I can get! :D )
The amount of "down" depends on the presentation and what I can see. If I know I won't have a lot of time to engage the bird I'll be just out of the pocket, if it's an incomer from 70 yards out I'll call pull while getting the gun out of the car 🤣. The only reason for shooting from a FITASC,  or similar mount is if you are forced to by the rules. Other than that let the target and your confidence / ability define your approach.
