The trouble is in all successful sports they have leagues, handicaps or classes, without them the sport dies at the grass roots.

It was one of the things that got me into registered shooting, I don’t manipulate my average by shooting only soft grounds or throwing shoots, but if someone else wants too then it doesn’t bother me.

Those as we are discussing in this case (soft grounds and ego trips) really don’t bother me and I see no harm in them.

If you got rid of the class system I would still keep shooting registered but I doubt I would have got into it the same in the first place.

If I was good enough to go straight into AA my first registered shoot then maybe I would have a different outlook, but I wasn’t and neither are the vast majority that start in our sport.

A tade harder is the same for all. To see a top gun miss a few gives hope. In days of old on a really hard stand, extrem crossers i shot seven out of ten when i turned round A. J. SMITH was there and said well shot young man he then went on and shot six.I was made up for weeks. You dont get that chance today with shoots won on 99 and 98 Lets get that three quater thing out from the bottom of the bag.it may be fun.

Clay Shooters Glossary :

Stupid Target - One that I can't hit, even if somebody else can.

sh*te Ground - A shooting ground where I don't do well.

True story -_-

OK lets try this from a different perspective, nominate 3 of your favourite targets which you would hope to see regular at every ground, give target type, include distance and speed, then lets see if a picture forms, add your current class. please don,t reduce this by plonker comments like "the ones I break "or " when they are on the card"

Another thing if you are looking at these blogs and not taking part in the debate ......WHY ?

Mine AA

45m crosser at good speed showing a little belly

30-40m teal (not coming back) shot on the way up

Driven bateu (curling pheasant ) 30m+

Will they be able to help with low fast crossers?
No, but you should make sure the gun fits, increase your cartridge speed and go and see a good coach (the sillier the hat they wear the better)... -_-

OK - I'll see where this takes us:

C-Class shooter, and I want to see:

High Crossers - either from a tower or bank (fast or slow / O/R or SIM)

Anything high, incoming and dropping - I enjoy the challenge of the long wait and a lead picture that involves height as well as width (like the bird that dropped off the hill on the blue course at the worlds)

30/40 yard teal - my bogey bird, so I want them every time to keep learning

C class

30/40 yard crossers (any hieght/speed)

30+ yard teal

30-35 yard chondel (any hieght/speed)

To be honest I want interesting targets and simo combinations, I am more excited when it’s something I have not seen before utilising the landscape or taking me out of my comfort zone.

Mine A Class.

Interesting simo pair that you are not too sure which to go for first, one has to be taken out of your comfort zone & at least one of the targets at distance.

Batue 30m+

Nice long crosser 35m+ any height or speed

I am usually quite good with teal at distance and I do shoot it on the way up but never seem to get excited about them, maybe because I can shoot them, but I did right Royally screw it up at the Beretta but that was a between the ears moment not the targets.

Thats the point, you would not have A, B, or C classes.
And that's my point - you'd kill off the shoots - unless you changed to a handicapping system, there would be no incentive for an A, B or C shooter to enter. The bottom 90% would be subsidising your top 12 placed shooters. Stupid idea.

So your saying you only go to a shoot on the off chance of picking up a few quid?.

Matt Thats what me and Fuz were saying earlier in the thread.

Why pay in all your hard earned to stand no chance, may as well go to a straw baler.

It's as if some of the higher ranks seem to think we are now taking THIER cash. unless they went straight in at the top then they must have taken some money on their way up,so why begrudge the lower ranks now they have made it to the top.

No - I'm saying I go to compete against my friends and peers at a similar level, and in a class - I would never so presumptive to say that I compete against the AA and A class shooters. The class system means I can compare myself against shooters of a similar level. It's not perfect, and I can think of many things we could do to improve the class system, but wiping it away would do more damage than good from a macro perspective.

This is partly why the world sporting format has been a success, Using a handycap system means everyone down the ranks stands a fair chance of being in the top six, take a look at www.worldsporting.net. I have done a couple of the shoots now and they are some of the most enjoyable events i have shot this year. Will be down at Southdown on Monday to shoot it again!
