just shoot the bloody thing and argue about it latter. He'd probably have a crack at it anyway cos you missed it :)

There appears to be more 'rules' in game shooting than clay shooting !! Who'd have thought?

Regarding a comment in another thread "£40 per bird" I shall never moan about the cost of clay shooting ever again.

Well, maybe a little bit :)

I know mate me neither more rules than issf.

I like to do things " propper like" and would not want to look like a cowboy banging away at anything that presents itself. So I keep thinking of these scenarios, over analytical I know but that's me as you know ?

re the cost, yes does seem expensive but half a dozen or whatever during the season is prob less than chasing team points. ?

Pity you can't take Salopian as your loader - he could keep you on the straight and narrow so to speak.

Note sure I agree entirely. I'm not sure £3K is going to buy you much in game days but sorts me out for a year. Double that with the boy of course.

A mate of mine very occasionally shoots the odd game day with a wealthy acquaintance who has a shooting budget of £25K per annum!!

I also heard of a shoot in Wales where, after 3 days of shooting, each client was presented with a bill for £9K. Gulp!!

If only

scenario

so far everyone even on quota.

a bird quartering towards you L to R in front of your peg but presenting as a straight incoming bird for peg to your right. Who's bird is it. ??
TD is right, get stuck into it and get in decked, bear in mind though if you miss it and the other gun drops it you could be ridiculed. They aren't very keen if you drop it straight at their feet though.

I'm afraid at times its survival of the fittest, step up or fade away! If someone shoots your birds it's time to man up and return the favour.

If it crosses you in range then its yours, try to limit your arc of fire to 40 degrees in either direction, only leave it if you think you won't kill it or its too low.  Its unlikely that a gun to your right that will see the word as straight driven will take it that far out in front (if that make sense).  Don't get too hung up on quota, if everyone has roughly the same amount of opportunities during the day then the game keeper has done very well indeed you cant be responsible for how well or poorly others shoot, however if for the second drive that day 70% of the birds come over you then you may wish to be ultra selective...  On the other hand if you think it would be a better sporting bird for the other gun by all means it leave it and hope that he or someone else reciprocates later on.

A lot of generalisations here - surely it is all dependent on the shoot - reminds me of Eric Morecombe to Andre Previn all those years ago -  many of the answers above are plainly right provided you have the right parameters

some questions to derive the applicable parameters

1 how well do you know the team

2 how big is the bag

3 are you paying for a single gun or are you a guest

4 how is the day progressing (have you been in the action/have those around you been leaving birds for you or taking each and all birds)

must be 10 or 15 more points of clarification that could be added

Shot a big high bird day today having taken a single gun - massive contrast to a 150 bird day with far fewer birds in the air on an invitation

Just a shame that some of 'The Rules' do not cover safety  !  That is why I am out tomorrow, accompanying a newcomer. Ear Defenders, Safety Glasses, small First Aid kit, Oh AND some Vaseline (to aid repositioning of his gun, if "He NO Listen")

Vaseline ! do you keep that in the rear of your back pack just in case

can I just confirm a specific.

is it ok to shoot a driven pheasant once its past the line of guns as in shoot it behind (up its ass so to speak) ???

Not really

First barrel out in front second above you and if the bird beats you let it go,it has won that right. However you do see folk shooting them going back but it's not very sporting.

thanks that's what I thought but I witnessed more than one shot taken that way today. I thought it was bad form but wanted to check.

cheers

Unfortunately you will see it a lot.

There are two kinds of game shooters, those who are after sporting birds and those who are after numbers.

maybe unlike me, many folk go on driven days without going into the etiquette side of things.

Actually 3,  you missed out the "IF IT FLIES,  IT DIES"  brigade, and there is a lot of them around. Some just lose all self control, and have to pull that trigger !

Indeed they do

Thats why many shoots ask for new guns to be accompanied by an experienced gun,if nothing else but for safety reasons.

I don't think anything appreciates being shot in the aris..

if they get past the punt where your spine is spent 45 degrees behind you then probably deserve to fly another day...
