I've had a full leather slip for over 10 yrs now. Goes out in all weathers, lays on wet muddy fields, gets rained on, still going strong.

If you can get the best you can afford as this will out last other slips

Good luck

Daz

John shooter leather gun slip(£130-150 on Amazon)
+1 on John shooter, had mine 4 years still comes up like new when cleaned. They are always on e bay auctions, you could be lucky and get one for £80 or so, but Expect to pay £120 ish, they are great value, and a quality slip

I am reading the responses with interest.

Don't the top fastening slips get annoying when you have to break your gun whilst pulling it out? When you have to do that after every stand it would get old quite fast. I do like the zipped type for that.

Oh, and I am terminally clumsy and scruffy so whatever I get needs to be hard wearing rather than pretty.

Mine is zipped, Liz - and it's hard wearing AND pretty!  (needs wipe over though!)

Liz,

All I would say is buy a decent Canvas/Leather or full Leather variety. I have a canvas and leather which is over 25 years old and still going strong. A bit like 'Triggers Broom' it has had a new bit of leather on the strap and buckle and I had a new wider carrying sling made to spread the gun weight a bit better. The advantage over the cheaper types, it CAN be repaired by a decent saddler.

I am a big fan of fairly cheap fabric slips as they are light to carry. I don't get all his mud business.. Fold it in half and place it on your generously sized gun bag while shooting. It doesn't touch mud..

I have a Hamilton too, but only take that places where there will be queing and no gun stands usually

It's not just clay shooting though, mine have always had to live with field work and anyone who has shot pigeon from a hide will tell you nothing stays shipshape no matter how hard you try and look after things. Also the only time I'd even take a slip out whilst clay shooting is when it's raining so mud will be unavoidable.

Got mine for £80 lasted 4 years so far..... has 2 massive advantages over every other slip. it will fit in any car boot inc a mini! doesnt look like a slip when folded up! with a  gun in 32" fits but is a squeeze.

Mine is the secure version which is brilliant when travelling!

Brett Parsons makes great all leather or leather and canvas slips, the follow up service is great the zip went on mine after about 10years of heavy used and Brett replaced it free of charge. his number is 01564792459

Someone's going to bring me a Croots slip next week so I can see how good they are. I'm also watching a couple on eBay, seeing what they go for. I've found an auction house near me that does gun sales and has vintage leather slips priced really low, but I can't go to the next one. I've also found a supplier of £12 canvas slips. Lots of options.

Probably not canvas, nylon.

I nearly bought a John Shooter slip from eBay but at the last minute realised it didn't appear to have a leather "foot" on it. As that's the bit that wears most I didn't bid higher.

Right, research has been done and I've had to go and lie down at some of the prices being charged for a leather gun slip. Following much research I've decided I'm going to get one of those handy Hamilton things with the funky legs.

Only kidding. Croots has won my heart. They do a leather slip with strap and handles and without a top buckle (annoying!). The question I have for you now: is anyone doing something comparable that I've missed?

Ask if they can make one without, as a manufacturer I am sure they could!

What's wrong with a buckle?
