What's wrong with a buckle?
It's an unnecessary extra step. 12 stands every weekend for a year and you will undo that buckle more than 600 times. You have to do it up the same number.

I have one with the top flap, and you don't need to undo it when taking your gun in and out. just the side zip.

I know Guardian leather slips come without a flap if you really don't want one though. think its the "Guardian Luxian"

I love buckles. I've had many a zip break down over the years but a buckle has never broken on me. On a decent leather gunslip the zip will be your weak point and let you down first.

It may be something to do with my association with a Master Saddler though. They don't put zips on horse tack (as far as I know) for a reason.

Thanks, good tip. I've just located that.

It does stop the gun from falling out though. I wont use slips that only have a zip as they burst and the gun falls to the floor as has happened twice to me. Mine has a buckle at the top to stop the zip undoing itself and one on the top flap. They are worth having for when you transport the gun in the slip, you can then just not do the buckle up while on the shooting ground if that is your wish.

How did that happen? Were you holding the slip upside down?
With the gun in the slip, the stock is the most bulky part. When you put it over your shoulder it puts pressure on the zip. When the teeth of the zip get worn they burst and out pops the gun.

How does the stock put pressure? Over your shoulder, the stock weight rests away from the zip (unless you have the gun upside down)

No, still don't get it. My zip faces forward, but not pressed against anything. Anyway.. Not really a conversation worth our time. :)
My strap is on the opposite edge to the zip so faces backwards.

Good / bad product design is always worth discussing

Just noticed you cant see any handles on the picture on the Croots slip, but they are there as well as the shoulder strap
You can get the Croots slips with/without handles and with/without buckles and zips. Personalise to what you require, including your initails embossed on them.

Remember, all leather is not created equal. Not going to run down any products mentioned here, but some leather is re-constituted and formed, like chipboard is to wood, then given a "veneer" to give the impression of real, solid leather so beware!!  Words like "full grain" or "bridal leather" but particularly "Made in England" are words to look out for if you seek quality components.  (Another tip from a Master Saddler!).     See and feel the difference!

Ah.. Apologies. HANDLES on zip side, but yes, strap on other side.. Still, never had the zip fail except due to snagging and wear (not pressure).

And I hate leather slips because they are so heavy and don't fold easily (placed on my bag while shooting).

Why not try one of the slips with legs attached. No need to fold it, it just stand there on its own!!!
Got one too! Good in the right circumstances, when lots of waiting around and or muddy. I rarely put my gun naked in a stand as have had lots of damage from clay shatter over the years

It happened to me at Westfield a few weeks ago - did the zip up and still holding the slip and the zip broke and the gun fell to the ground.  Fortunately onto soft grass and earth and was undamaged.  I have just purchased a new leather slip, still with the side zip but a buckle that goes across so if it does give way something holds it in place hopefully giving me time to rescue it.  The original leather gunslip was just over a year in age - not good at all.

I don't like leather slips, opted for a cordura one, made by a company that makes shooting mats and cases for rifles and airguns - they'd never made anything for a shotgun, but they were keen to help and it was fun to spec it out.

Note my gun has 28" barrels, so there is room to change gun (shod fit up to 32"), and the shoulder strap is in the middle of the case, so the gun sits flat on my back and doesn't tend to move when schlepping from place to place. Has a long zip down one edge and snap buckles at the top - easy to use and replaceable.

I also got a case to carry the gun dismantled, as it fits better in SWMBO's car than when in the slip. Looks a bit "tacticool", but it does the job, and when you open the boot of the car it just looks like an art portfolio or something. It also fits in the space under the boot in my car where the spare wheel would go if they deigned to provide one, so it can be locked down with a cable and hidden away...

They have made it the classic rifle and scope shape, so looks wrong for a shotgun, but great idea!
