With respect, I'm not sure I'd want to take any dietary advice from George Digweed. Slow release foods are the answer. A decent breakfast cereal and maybe toast before you start. If you run into lunch them some fruit will do. Avoid a cooked breakfast, they take a long time to digest and do you no good at all. Save the heavy meals for the evening.

Between rounds water is fine. I would drink at least a litre of it's hot.

Check out the DVD by Rudi Vigano and Marco Venturini, they go through pre shoot and shoot day nutrition and hydration, as renato Lamera in his latest book.

Certain energy drinks are banned in France due to the health risks they pose, that should tell you enough....
what are these alledged health risks pray tell

Wouldent have a energy drink now i used to have one on way to the ground an shot terrible when i did so just take a banana and water round now an leave the goodies while after ( freid stuff )

I think a lot of this is psychological, years ago I had a RedBull and despite feeling perfectly normal seemed to shoot below par, Lucozade appeared to do the opposite the first time I tried it hence I now routinely have some in the car and have a sip to avoid a dry mouth just before setting off.

I've had similarly fruitful results with banana's and a small amount of chocolate but there is little doubt that a full belly especially with certain foods such as bacon is not a good idea.

I once went to a shoot at Haigh hall in Wigan they had a 10 bird pool shoot....there was no straights in it was hard! after  many goes I went to club house had 2 pints of larger then decided to have one last go ....10 balls of dust.

( It was a one off...drink and guns do not mix I know )

Avoid at all costs unless its something like Shooter Fuel which is tailored to the job at hand.... However you do have to go quite a way to buy it... .  Caffiene and lots of sugar etc are the last things you need...

If shooting in hot weather in the UK (so very rarely....)  I tend to use Lucozade Sport lite... as its more about rehydration than anything else...

If you need energy drinks during a 100 sporting I would suggest a lighter gun.
in a shoot like the essex masters i really need to keep energy up just as you need up walking a hell of a long way. But no need for "energy drinks" consume figs and nuts and water to keep the levels up!

Depends what you define as an 'energy' drink. Red bull, Monster etc. pretty bad as full of caffeine and sugar, designd to spike and 'bring you up', good with vodka, brain works legs don't/won't. Lucazade sport or similar are designed to balance electrolytes and rehydrate you, always have one of this type to hand, even at work as I suffer from dehydration. I'd take advice on pie recipes from George, but for sports nutrition I'd look elsewhere. That said if he's practicing what he preaches it works ok for him.

I can't find the film of GD talking about this drink but if he does mention ENERGY drink I suspect he's mistaken. I would think the drink he is talking about is more likely to be a SPORTS drink.

  • Isotonic sport drinks contain similar concentrations of salt and sugar as in the human body.
  • Hypertonic sport drinks contain a higher concentration of salt and sugar than the human body.
  • Hypotonic sport drinks contain a lower concentration of salt and sugar than the human body.
There's no caffeine or energy boosts in these drinks, they are supposed to hydrate and replenish electrolytes and if your sport makes you sweat a lot then you can get a mix that will replace salts.

Again, for shooting in the UK I think water or flavoured water would be more than enough.

I went through a good few years mixing these drinks for my daughter who as a competitive swimmer was putting in a lot of hours a week in the pool and good hydration was very important. To be honest I think water would have done the job just the same as it's impossible to measure the effect of such sports drinks IMO.

In all fairness I don't think GD is pretending to have brewed these recipes, he's getting involved on a commercial basis and who wouldn't given half a chance ?

I don't buy it. Sorry
oh, do you have clinical research to rubbish these claims that 'energy drinks' are safe then and do not cause any medical issues?..... Feel free to publish.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that GD has got his chemistry set out and come up with the recipe but has endorsed it (financial gain) and has suggested that it is helpful for shooters, which I would argue it isn't... Each to their own and all that, mind.

Red Bull is best drank over ice and watered down 1 part Vodka, 3 parts Rud Bull!!!
