I shot Cambridge today and it must have been the hardest round I've ever shot.  Sim pairs of rocketing away clays, several 60 yard slow crossers, sim pairs of incomers that refused to get closer than 40 yards, a quartering away 60 yard rabbit, and a 10 stand consisting of a 90 yard crow followed by a 60 yard crosser. The current world champion won it on 84. I hit 62 my worse score for 10 years.
Oh the good ole days, not.

Lets face it there will be loads of people below the "trashed card" 10% rule so it will have just been a waste of money if it was registered.

Cambridge for me yesterday, as Chippy has said, it was quite a challenge! My 58 won C class..... Still nice sunny day and really friendly squad to shoot with.

Shot it as well, I was in a squad of very good shots including two AAs and the highest score on our squad was 72. I’m A class and shot 66. It was not just the degree of difficulty outlined by Chippy but also a lot of birds were difficult to see against the different backgrounds. Also it was the inconsistency and variability, targets at the end of their flight being blown by the wind. Even a fast low simmo pair every pair was substantially different. A quartering driven looper was also very difficult to see the way the sun was catching it..

I like a challenging shoot as much as anyone but in my oppinion they got the balance wrong, it happens sometimes especially with varying weather conditions but it does make you appreciate the grounds where they get it consistently right.

Was there any conversation with the course setter? It doesn’t usually go well.

Just had a look at the scores.  I thought the Willinghurst Shoot on Saturday was set tough (three or four of the stands were anyway), but from the results Cambridge looks even harder.

Cambridge had half the shooters below 60. I usually ignore HG to judge a shoot as top guys can do anything. The real trend is best shown at the bottom of the results. Most normal shoots have no more than 10% of the entry on 55 or lower. Here it was 32%. Only 3 shooters broke 80%. You have to wonder what the course setters mantra is.

I don’t want to go into that, it’s another “can of worms”!
Oh please do .

Surprised there's no one on here telling us how fantastic it was and how they love shooting these " challenging" targets and how much they learned from the shoot😉. And how they can't wait for the next one.😁 And then in a year or so we don't hear a peep out of them . 🤔

Starting to vote much more with my feet these days.

Jasper.

Almost exclusively I think if course setters were chefs, they would be cooking marvellous flavours constantly. But when 80% of the diners complained they would just suggest that their tastes were wrong.

Well I learned so much from this shoot and from these targets.

Mainly not to go back

Ian Coley reg today. I did wonder if a streaming cold and hacking chest was wise to take on a shoot but not sure if it was a factor. Suffice to say some good stands but too relentless. 2 targets I never hit. Had an extra go at an 80 yard high looper and hit it with as much lead as I’ve ever used.

Ended on 76. Rest of my squad 64 or lower. 79 was leading when I left at 2pm although some top shooters going out on last squads. A bit brutal all told. Sigh..

That's three shoots in less than a week that have been set on the tough side.  Be interesting to see what EJC is like tomorrow.  Was hoping to go but some bar-steward of a client wants me to go to a meeting, so I'm going to miss it.

So not many course setters reading this forum then. 😁

I shot coleys today and as Will said it was a tough but I thought it a fair shoot. You had a bit of everything from long crossers to long quartering rabbits, and yes the target your referring to did need a chunk of lead.

The only bad stand was the simo pair going away at warp speed, it would have been hard enough as a report pair, simo was just brutal, for the record I only hit two,and to be honest I don’t know how I managed that.

I managed a 66, which considering 79 was the highest score when we left, I’m not displeased with.

That sim pair would have been tough on report. I never missed the right hand target, which I shot first. The other target, I needed to get well under it (as it was so far out by then) but literally couldn’t as that would have meant likely shooting the top of the wooden board in front of the trap.

Good to meet you Wynno. I know you’re a fan of testing shoots and nothing wrong with that, but if you invite 100 people of mixed abilities a decent balance is needed. Only two people on my squad above the 50’s. A new shooter would be exchanging his Beretta for golf clubs after today.

As someone who is vertically challenged, that thought did cross my mind when shooting those.... perhaps we should have..... it would make the course setter rethink things...... honest guv I didn’t mean to shoot the trap.

Good to finally meet up with you to Will.

The first shoot was affected by wind and this one was tough, let’s hope the next one will be just right and a fair mix for all abilities

would he get a decent set of clubs if he traded in his beretta ??????????

Coleys also, found it tough 😐 got lots wrong, made errors aplenty,☹️ didnt like the use of the green clays, less so an incomer with grass background, old mans eyes mind. A simo trap target stand of 5 pairs trashed many cards, it was told that earlier in day a shot “mistakenly” put a cartridge full into the carosel 😳 For me, and would imagine Im not alone in thats it is a day to forget. Hoping that this mid week 20mins from front door shoot offers more joy rest of summer,
